When auto-replace strikes! And for a second there, one could almost think the American Family Association was lauding the accomplishments of a homosexual.

The AFA is pretty funny in and of itself. I read some of the blogs and "news" stories. Sad yet so funny.

But replacing words in the AP stories should be violating something, right? I would hope the AP has some rights about their stories. Wouldn't they?

Yes and no. It's a fairly universal practice for newspapers that subscribe to the wire services to make minor changes and adopt a wire story as their own. Since their contract with the wire services is to pay for stories that they intend to republish in their paper, they're given some serious leeway, and if they change enough of the story sometimes they'll even slap a new byline on it and pretend a different reporter did it. The papers also sometimes peculiar individual stylebook choices for political reasons. For instance, there is a group in Iraq called "al Qaeda in Iraq." If an AP story quotes the U.S. military calling them AQI, then the New York Times, when quoting the AP, adds "AQI is the military's abbreviation for al Qaeda in Mesopotamia."

The problem in this case is another in a long line of how politically-correct stylebook choices become self-parody.

During the Paris riots in 2005, CNN's Carol Lin was on the air describing how the rioters were upset that "two African-American teens" had been killed. This was absurd, as there were no Americans involved at all (they were French citizens, and Tunisian in origin), but having been trained to never say 'black' it just rolled out of her mouth.
