  • Need your computer repaired? See a private investigator

    Strange new Texas law requires a PI license to repair computers:

    There's GOT to be something not being said here.. that's just ridiculous.
    Perhaps it applies to forensic data retrieval... but standard repairs? No way.

      15(d)(12)(b) reads "repairs an electronic security device". That's the only place I see repair and electronics mentioned together.

          The section Scratch quoted is actually listed under "exemptions", so I doubt thats it. But I found one or two other lines that could be broadly interpreted to apply to computer repair companies:

          (a) A person acts as an investigations company for the purposes of this chapter if the person:
          1) engages in the business of obtaining or furnishing, or accepts employment to obtain or furnish, information related to:
          (C) the location, disposition, or recovery of lost or stolen property;
          (D) the cause or responsibility for a fire, libel, loss, accident, damage, or injury to a person or to property;
          Since one of the primary jobs of computer repair techs is to recover lost data, which is a sort of property, you could interpret that law to apply to them. Its a stretch though, and obviously not what the law was intended to say.

          Therefore, if government agencies are going after computer techs on this law, the agencies themselves should be blamed for grossly abusing the law before legislators should be blamed for writing something stupid. That said, an amendment to clarify computer repair is not intended here wouldn't be too bad an idea.

            I saw this on Slashdot the other day, and it does seem it's getting interpreted too broadly.
