  • How the Hell?

Well, I came across a video on YouTube and I found it rather peculiar. The video is below, and if you know the answer to the question, don't spoil it - I got the answer by reading the comments which were hidden by the video poster. Eh, just a moderately unusual thing for the general population...

Capture video at the exact framerate it takes to make the rotors look still. The blade noise gives it away.

In mother Russia, air pushes chopper up, not the other way around! It's just the framerate of the camera not being high enough to catch the blades spinning, that's all.

edit: you post whore Ferris! :)

I didn't join a squad once and this guy named Nardini took me into the back room and beat me with a sock of oranges.

The technical term would be aliasing. The camera needs to be capturing video at 2x faster than the frequency of the helo's blade rotation to seamlessly capture it.

At the Sox game last night, I actually saw a helicopter hovering in midair for the like the first time ever I think. I don't know why, but it was pretty cool to see that.

I think this video was posted a few months back, but still, so cool to see.

Farris.. Nardini... Bah, you're forgiven. Meh, I just thought it was kinda cool to actually see, I've read about stuff similiar before but never was able to actually see it.

the tail rotor is pretty cool too... just barely spinning...

It is sweet that you don't see the motion blur at all.

you can see the blades move very slowly when the increase/ decrease rotor speed.

You see this same effect with car wheels of certain patterns at night, under the neon-type streetlights as you drive alongside. Sodium gas streetlights (the pinkish ones) don't work.

                              Re: How the Hell?

The reason is pretty obvious anyway. Ever notice in car commercials that the wheels appear to spin backward? Once again it's because of framerate (well film speed), this time because it is slower than the wheel spin.
