  • Red state/Blue state BS

I remembered that I had this pic from the last Presidential election, and I wanted to remind everyone that we're not red or blue, but, as a nation, more of a purple. Sure there are definitely areas that lean one way or the other, but look at the overall color of this image:

Might be a little bit more blue this time around.

Strange, looking at that map I see that water has great influnce on voting. Where there is large waterbodies you have a more blue hue to the voting, perhaps the color of the waterbody is affecting voters?

What's interesting is (to my eye) it seems as though the colors for the 08 map are more pronounced than those for the 04 one. Less purple, more bright red and bright blue.

This is a pretty cool Google gadget that lets you zoom in and see the actual numbers for each county. It doesn't blend the colors unfortunately.

Large cities tend be located near large bodies of water, which allow for greater access to trade (and water, of course). They attract a diverse group of people and the dissemination of different cultures and ideas. They also have the most educational and professional opportunities.

It would be interesting to compare to population density. I would speculate that blue tends to be urban, red rural.

poker it looks like they didn't break down as far as the old version but i saw that too. You see more defined areas in the old one so this one looks more blocky, I'm not sure if that's less detail or more concentrated voting. Could be an effect of 20 months of campaigning.
