  • SWAT Magazine, February Issue...

Uhh... wow. I don't know if anyone here reads this magazine but I would suspect at least a few do. Pages 36-38 feature an article called, "Take Your Kids Out of Public Schools". It's listed under "Enemy at the Gate" written by Stephen Rhodes.

Basically the gist of the article is the fact that since schools wont allow teachers the ability to carry firearms, and have a zero tolerance weapon policy, that you should take your kid out and home school them.

This author scares the crap out of me. The problem with this country are people like this. He says, "Strike a blow for liberty and the Constitution. Take your kids back". I understand that schools have very strict (and often times far too strict) policies on weapons. He cited a kid who brought a Transformer toy to school and was sent home because it had a toy switchblade. Yes extreme... but why do kids need to bring toys to school anyway. So really who cares with that example. :P

But he rants on and on stating, "Do you have any reason to believe that the socialist hoplophobes who run those government indoctrination centers are any saner when it comes to other topics". Huh? This sounds a bit extreme to me.

I went to school in New York, and I've gone to school here in Colorado. I've gone into schools while I've worked, and I've seen what these kids are like. Some are just outright psychotic as are some of the teachers. I'm not so sure I would feel comfortable in having a gun around my kid (possessed by some irate teacher who may or may not possess the necessary firearms training). What I would support are state certified Officers (maybe one per school) that can provide security until other Officers arrive. I want the person carrying that gun to know basic firearm safety rules like... "Know your target and what lies beyond it". The average person wouldn't know to be careful in a tight school setting where a bullet could easily strike through a target and hit a child beyond.

I have guns... I have plenty at my house. My kid knows NEVER to touch them. He'll point at my gun as I'm getting ready for work, and say "That's for shooting the bad guys right?". So what would he think of guns when his teacher has one? That they're for bad kids too? No I wouldn't want just any average Joe carrying a gun in my kids school. But like I said, I would be in support of a Law Enforcement Officer in a school who is properly trained.

This author is VERY extreme in his thinking and it scares me that people like him exist. It's worse that the damn magazine published it. I wonder if they even read it. I don't know... maybe as a trained Officer, former military Infantryman, and a father my views are skewed. I'm very much in support of the right to bear arms... but I think there's a time and place for it.

Thoughts? I tried to find the article to link it or quote it here, but I wasn't able to get through to their website. If anyone finds it be sure to link it.

Eh? You got that impression how? I hope you're not implying that I don't because then I'd definitely certify you as crazy.

        Agreed.

As for the article --- there are alot of crazy people out there who cling to their guns and make completely unrealistic judgements about where guns should and shouldn't be.
