No need to try to be the peaceful mediator in an argument between mother and daughter. The Taser is the answer to all your problems both foreign and domestic. Especially domestic. I mean, the 14 yr old girl had it coming. Right? She abused her mother, sent explicit messages on her phone to older men, and ran away from the police station.

Don't bother trying to talk her back into the station or anything like that. Just drop her with a Taser shot. Right? Case closed. I'm sure it all falls under standard operating procedure. Tasers are much safer than subdoing someone anyway. Right?

I don't know why people make such a big deal about this Taser thing. The Department Of Defense and Taser International both say that they are safe. And we all know how reliable the goverment and their contractors are. They would never lie or mislead the general public. Right? Taser tied to 'independent' study that backs stun gun

She has epilepsy already, this would not have helped.

Looks to me like the guy was too old to be chasing after teenagers so he decided to be lazy and tazered her instead - bet he wishes he hadn't now.

She wasn't an aggressor, she was running away with her mom still at the police station (so they knew where she lived anyway) What an a$$.

Instead of objecting to cops' use of tasers, how about we switch to mandating the right of every citizen (man, woman, and child) to carry one? I sure wouldn't mind seeing the underdogs of the playground being able to tase the bullies! Maybe we'd see a more polite society if shoving someone half your size left you flopping on the ground like a downed high tension wire.

Life dictates that bullies would be the ones buying the tazers - you can see where that's going........

How do you come up with that? The whole idea is to equalize everyone's ability, so the smallest and weakest are now just as strong as the muscled guys who took martial arts.

The problem in the first post is that we have a bully with a taser shooting someone who has multiple barriers to possessing one. Although he also has a badge which shields him from retribution. If everyone was armed (and we got rid of numerous victimless crime laws that empower organized crime), perhaps we wouldn't need so many badges.

The answer to violence isn't "more violence" - look at human nature and you will notice the "one-upmanship" that is prevalent throughout the world would only intensify if the ability to 'one-up' was given to everyone !!! Violence would never stop. The only reason it eventually stops these days is because the chain reaction flows all the way down to the bottom where no one is able to effectively retaliate and the cycle is finally broken. Interfere with that and the cycle continues indefinitely to a lesser or greater degree.

And if the girl had been given a tazer, the cop would have just pulled a gun instead.

The thing about bullies is that if you lower yourself to their level even once or even for a short period of time then you have become one of them (a bully to the bully) and so where is the line drawn? and who are you to draw such a line?

Re: Police Chief Tasers 14-Year-Old Girl in the Head

I wonder, if we armed every prisoner in prisons, would it stop violence in prisons and make all the prisoners polite?

I mean, if your theory that if everyone is equal in ability to hurt/disable others then everyone else will be deterred (too scared?) to hurt/disable anyone, it follows that we have a solution to violence in prisons.

Or it could backfire and everyone start tasering other people often. We already know in iterated prisoner's dilemma or iterated peace war games, tit for tat (or something similar like tit for tat + random forgiveness) is the best strategy. It's a simple argument that in finitely iterated games, one should defect or retaliate from the start because you should retaliate on the last iteration. In these types of games players have equal ability to hurt and gain from other players. Retaliating from the start is the only way not to get taken advantage of, even if it nets players less utility than if they had cooperated. It shouldn't be hard to see how this is applicable to Scratch's suggestion. By tasering preemptively, you make things unequal again by taking away their ability to taser you.

Or compare your argument with the following analogous line of reasoning.

EA's new plan to stop hacking and save money:

Give everyone access to hacks. If everyone has access to hacks, then everyone has capability to play at the same level. If everyone has the capability to play on the same level by hacking, then everyone will be deterred from using their hacks, since others could retaliate by using the same hacks on them. Therefore, if we give everyone access to hacks nobody will use hacks and everyone will become polite team-oriented players, and we won't have to pay so many employees to police the players and respond to related complaints. This plan will result in many fewer hackers.

Do you think EA's new plan will work?

The defining characteristic of a bully is one who preys upon those much weaker than himself. If everyone is equally powerful, there can be no bullies.

sordavie, much to think about, as always. Thanks for being the guru on the mountain. ;)

I went and read through Wikipedia's coverage of iterated prisoner's dilemma again, and am still chewing it over. But note that a requirement of the defect strategy is that the finite iteration count is known. Adding communication between the players also complicates things a lot.

                            http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prisoner%27s_dilemma

In the prison case, do we really care if the initial result is a massacre? Any remaining survivors should be peaceful. And if there are no survivors, then we've just solved the prison overcrowding problem. ;)

The hacking example is interesting. I've long thought that server admins, not publishers, should have the final say on who to ban. Instead of banning hackers centrally, one could have registries of keys of those known to hack, and some admins might want to run hack-only servers.

This is similar to the way spam blacklists work. Anyone can start an IP address or domain name blacklist, and anyone can subscribe. The SpamAssassin spam detection filter subscribes to many blacklists and has configurable scores for each, so you're not at the mercy of a rogue blacklist.

This is a self defeating statement. There will always be someone with more prowess in using a device/weapon than you and will therefore have the advantage. Take the games we play around here. Everyone has the same equipment to draw from and yet there are those that are easily superior in using them.
