  • The Second Amendment - Yes We Can!

    http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/...entry_id=45689

I admit, I laughed out loud. And I have to say, good on the guys with the guns. Frankly, we do have the right to keep and bear arms, provided we keep and bear them in accordance with the laws of the land. Also, I like how a lot of these articles put special emphasis on 'Assault Rifle' as though it were somehow more dangerous than any other kinetic pea-shooter.

Oh, and Props to Obama for, as near as I can tell, not freaking out and siccing the Secret Service on these guys or putting them in designated protest areas. Whee! We're America again!

I think the lack of violence by the people carrying the weapons shows that it isn't necessary to override rights just because the president is within 1 mile.

Of course the people weren't in view/range of the president per the head of the Secret Service and they would have had to remove the guns if they had been due to some other stuff. See a related article here: http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/08/...fle/index.html

You had better believe the guy's head was in a sniper's crosshairs until the President's airplane was over the Mississippi as well.

I don't have proof but I'd be surpirsed if the Secret Service wasn't just a little bit nervous about a guy walking around with an AR-15 right outside of where the President was speaking. This quote is particularly telling:

The individuals would never have gotten close to the president, regardless of any state laws on openly carrying weapons - Ed Donovan, Secret Service spokesman

If you wanted to assassinate the president.. it'd be smart to have a bunch of guys OPENLY armed with assault rifles, while you have another concealed carrying man take the shot while all eyes are on the OPENLY carrying ones.

There's always one or more marksman teams present at presidential functions (the outdoor ones, at least). When President Bush came to speak to the troops at Fort Drum in... 2003? It was a while ago. Anyway, when he came to speak to us, it was in the middle of giant open parade field we had on base. They had erected an open-roofed enclosure with walls on all sides that only had one entrance in and out for the public. I looked behind me when I got inside (I was near the front) and sure enough, on top of the big central platform that had the entrance below it was a sniper team, one guy spotting and the other on his belly behind the rifle (along with other Secret Service agents stationed along the perimeter wall).

Re: The Second Amendment - Yes We Can!

As Jon Stewart has thoughtfully observed, Bush had expelled people with home-made anti-Bush T-shirts in previous events, yet Obama has allowed people with guns to attend/stand near events. Whether this reflects badly on either administration is a matter of opinion.
He was told that he should not kill, and he did not kill, until he got into the Army. Then he was told to kill, and he killed.

That's not proof that one of the snipers kept this guy 'in his crosshairs' for the duration of the event. As noted in the article the guy was outside the event and not in view of the president. Maybe they kept an eye on him, I'm disagreeing with the possible hyperbole.

Re: The Second Amendment - Yes We Can!

I'm sure they were carefully watched, but it's like people who send death threat letters to the president... they take those seriously, but the people they REALLY worry about are those who aren't out in the open.

After all, if I'm going to hit someone to try and really hurt them rather than just scare them, I'm not going to say, "I'm going to hit you now."

Uh, ok. Whatever. If you think the shooter's not scanning possible threats with his scope, you're being silly. Is that proof for you?

No, you specified this one guy, and that he was in sniper's crosshairs, then gave an unrelated story and then backtracked to 'scanning'.

I don't doubt that the guy was watched, I'm just saying you are seriously over the top on what you expect from the security.

I didn't specify anything, and I didn't backtrack. It was Bucket's hyperbole. I thought your request for proof was related to the presence of snipers at rallies. If it were a presidential rally outside, it would have been a situation similar to what I described at Drum. Complete with sniper team(s) stationed in multiple locations. Since the Secret Service doesn't post its security plan on the internet for interested persons like you and I to peruse, all I can draw upon is first-hand accounts.

I'm interested to know why you doubt Bucket's statement, though.
