  • The victims of terror

Like all photogenic tragedies involving airliners, 9/11 tends to eclipse other acts of terror. It might be good to remember all the other events that have occurred around the world at the same time.

So the idea here is to try to list all the events we can remember, both large and small.

Two that come to mind for me are the Oklahoma City Federal Building and the 2005 London subway bombings. But again, these are big ones. What small ones, particularly outside the US, can others recall?
    Dude, seriously, WHAT handkerchief?

    Re: The victims of terror

There have been a series of bombings in.. What, Indonesia? over the past few years. The Mumbai attack in India a year or two back. There was that thing where I think Chechens seized a theatre in Russia a few years ago, then got gassed out by Russian Internal security forces. And the whole Basque nationalism furball in Spain. And you could probably call a lot of the petty wars going on in unstable areas of Africa terrorism if you felt like it. Oh, and various South American nations have had all kinds of state and political terrorism over the last century. Various 'Disappearances' by various governments come to mind.

Sarin (sp) gas attacks on the Japanese subway by that wacko cult. A high death toll was expected but it was not as effective as previously thought.

        Re: The victims of terror

There are new victims of terror every single day right now - this week alone American, Brittish, Iraqi and Afghani soldiers have been killed either in terrorist attacks or attacks on terrorists. This along with scores of civilian deaths.

Terrorism isn't a matter of remembering victims or attacks - it is a plague on humanity itself. The only way to fight it is to address the conditions that give birth to it - oppression (real or imagined) and/or religious extremism.

A lot of the "victims" of terror are also currently living in Iraq and Afganistan. Those wars have taken a terrible toll on the civilian population.

Anyone who has seen any of Nicolas Cage's movies in the last 5 years, they are a victim.

On a serious note. The victims of the first bombing of the WTC, Madrid train bombings, Oklahoma City Federal Building bombing, Khobar Towers bombing,Pan Am Flight 103 Lockerbie bombing, USS Cole.
