  • Reid quote.

As I understand it Reid basically said because Obama was a light skinned black and didn't have the Negro dialect unless he wanted to he would do well in the president race.

I really do not see where acknowledging benefits ones race give is being racist.

    Re: Reid quote.

The whole controversy is utterly stupid. I think the GOP is simply doing it because of how they've been treated over the years. If any Republican says a similar thing, they get totally blasted over it. I think they're just treating the Dems how they've been treated. But honestly, I think this approach is immature, and just continues the cycle of typical politics. Shame on them. They're making a big issue over nothing, in my opinion.

Is there a link to a story on the topic? I have no idea what was said or who is reacting to it and as it appears to be a comment about the presidential race from 2008 I don't see why it is news now.

I think they key to all of this hinges around what is meant to be a "light-skinned Black". Aside from physical differences, of course, there's an implication in the second sentence about how that and a "negro dialect" would prevent one from becoming president.

I'll be the first to admit that one has to take a few leaps of logic to necessarily arrive at "Reid is a rascist", but far fewer (and simpler) to simply cast that aspersion.

Political opportunism is all it is. Not sure why this needs to be all over the news for days when there is much more important things going on.

If a republican would've used those exact words he or she would have been bounced from their position in a matter of seconds, just ask Trent Lott. No one accepted his apology.

The same reason any of this type of stuff is news: we expect better (why? still a mystery) and take delight when someone looks the fool or hypocrite.

If he did it when Lott did it, sure. These days, I don't think a Republican would get bounced very far for those words, given the far swing the ideological pendulum seems to have taken in the past two years or so.

It's mild enough that a Democrat wouldn't get ousted, and a Republican would get "LOOK AT HOW THE DEMOCRATS ARE PERSECUTING US" facetime on the news.

Politics at its finest. As far as Reid's statement goes I don't view him as a racist at all, but the offensive part is with the negro dialect. It implies that the typical black uses a "negro dialect" which is bad and unwanted. Not true, but still not a statement that should land him in any hot water.

                  Re: Reid quote.

There is, and has always been an undercurrent of racism in Washington. Obama has pressurized the situation. Everyone is carefully tip toeing around the issue, no one wants to be made an example of to show the world how tolerant Washington has become.

One of those country club politicians is going to slip up like Mr Reid did, but much much worse. It's only a matter of time.

                    Re: Reid quote.

The actual quote, from Yahoo news:

WASHINGTON – Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid apologized on Saturday for saying Barack Obama should seek — and could win — the White House because Obama was a "light skinned" African-American "with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one."
Reid is correct IMO, although using the derogatory term "Negro" was a poor choice. People should be free to discuss race issues without resorting to words that invoke the specter of historical racial crimes. I'm not going to say that they CAN'T, because its their freedom of thought and speech to say how they feel. Although, some of ideas invoked by their use should be discredited for what they are, as stereotypes.

I've always hated the "PC" movement that started in the 90s. Not because I'm a racist, but because you're telling people what words they can and cannot say, which is a slap in the face to constitutionally protected free speech.
