  • Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams going to U.S. for heart surgery

Guess he didn't want to wait in line in Canada for this surgery. I wish him all the best and hope for a successful and speedy recovery.

Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams is set to undergo heart surgery this week in the United States.

CBC News confirmed Monday that Williams, 60, left the province earlier in the day and will have surgery later in the week.

The premier's office provided few details, beyond confirming that he would have heart surgery and saying that it was not necessarily a routine procedure.

Deputy Premier Kathy Dunderdale is scheduled to hold a news conference Tuesday morning.

She's expected to provide more details about Williams's condition, as well as how the provincial government will function during his absence.

CBC reporter David Cochrane said Williams appeared to be in good health recently. He described the premier as "fairly active," playing pick-up hockey at least once a week when work permits.

You do know the last study I'd read shows equal wait times in Canada and the US, right? No one ever contested that if you're dripping with cash and need a specialist, that the US is one of the best places to go. People just doubted whether that's worth having awful healthcare costs for the benefits. Consider that there are far more people in the US. If you have a very rare condition, going to a US clinic is going to give you a much better shot at having a physician who's actually encountered the problem before.

The figure I recall for Canada is a median wait of three weeks for all surgeries. According to this, in the US its15 days for a typical cardiology appointment, (so, better than Canada) three weeks for dermatology (even), four weeks for ob/gyn (not surprisingly worse than canada), 17 days for orthopedic surgery, and 20 days for pediatrics. So, averaging everything, the US has a five day shorter waiting period for one type of surgery.

I'm way too lazy and far too busy to get involved with an in-depth look at their methodology, but have a fun image!

edit: Well done, US! We beat out Canada. Lets ignore the fact that we lose to several other countries and trumpet the victory of our system. If you're taking this as proof or something about how good our healthcare system is, I suppose you ignore all the people who cross the border to buy drugs in Canada?

Lines are lower when not everyone has access.

Just because everyone does something does not mean that it is right to do.

You know, this isn't necessarily true. :p Somehow some of the European countries have managed more access and lower lines, at least based on that Commonwealth Fund study that I haven't read yet.

Well if you're talking about places with relatively fewer people and more doctors per capita, sure. I'm sure Switzerland has more access and lower lines. And it's probably because they have so many fewer people and more doctors per person than we have in the states.

That sounds like a slogan from the Soviet era.
