  • New carcinogenic pesticide to be used on strawberries

    http://www.mercurynews.com/breaking-news/ci_14998424

The state moved closer Friday to permitting a controversial pesticide designed to replace ozone-depleting methyl bromide.

Methyl bromide has long been used to fumigate berry fields to clear soil-borne diseases and pests before planting, but it's being phased out under international treaty.

The state Department of Pesticide Regulation is proposing to allow the use of methyl iodide instead.

The fumigant, marketed by Tokyo-based Arysta LifeScience Corp. under the name Midas, does not deplete ozone, but is considered too toxic for safe use by many scientists. State regulators say the proposal contains tough restrictions that will safeguard health.
So is this another mercury-in-our-vaccine scare? Or is it a legitimate concern? Should we give up strawberries to protect the ozone layer?

To be fair, they're not using it ON strawberries; they're using it on fields where strawberries will be planted later, after the pesticide has been cleared.

Beyond that I don't know enough to comment intelligently.

Eat raspberries instead, they're much tastier. Or just don't use pesticides and accept that insects like to eat fruit as well.

Even better, eat lingonberries. Much less sweet. I love them with butter on crepes or toast. You'll find them in the cafe at Ikea, and can order them at IHOP with "Swedish pancakes".

Oh, I can tear up a plateful of IHOP's swedish crepes. Lingonberries are the bomb-diggity.

Don't like most other berries including strawberries and raspberries because the seeds annoy me. Smuckers makes seedless berry jams now, that I really like.

I know what you mean about the seeds. I get them caught in my teeth and they drive me nuts. Only the seedless jams make them bearable. Blackberry is also very nice in that case.

When I order cheeses blintzes at IHOP, I ask them to substitute lingonberries. Sometimes they even get the order right.

Now for pancake syrup, raspberry is my favorite. IHOP used to have that at the table but now I have to get it at a specialty store for use at home.

If they were to implement this, I'd just stop buying American strawberries. Raspberries and blueberries are my personal favourites.

You could always eat the stuff irrigated with nice, healthy sewage:
