  • Video editing rig - thoughts on needed upgrades please.

I know, I have been MIA for way too long. I am sorry (though many of you may not be.. and even more probably don't even remember me).

So anyway, I have been getting blasted with work lately - mostly graphic design, website design, and video editing. To make my life easier, I am investing everything I get from a larger job I have just landed to upgrade all my equipment at once.

Laptop (keeping this - it works well for photoshop and light video work, and the touchscreen is great)

    Toshiba Portege m400
    Core2Duo 2.1ghz
    4gig DDR2
    intel gma945
160gig 720rpm (may upgrade this to a TB)
    DVD+-RW
    12.1" 1400x1050 touchscreen
    22" 1680x1050 Dell
    wireless keyboard & mouse

    Old Desktop:

    Core2Quad 8200 2.33Ghz
    8gig DDR2
    Radeon 4870 512meg
    2x 640gig 7200rpm in raid1
    750gig 7200rpm data / program cache / pagefile
    750watt Silverstone
    DVD+-RW
    24" 1920x1200 Samsung

    4x External 2TB WD drive
Sony HDR-SR11 1080i 10mp HD handicam for video (and some still)
Canon Rebel XT 7.1MP (still pictures)
    Bose on-ear headphones

    keeping from desktop:
power supply, monitor, Possibly video card, headphones, 4 2TB drives

    New Rig:

    Core i7 960 3.2ghz
    12gig DDR3
    1.5TB 7200rpm
    Nvidia GTX 240 1024meg
    X-Fi platinum
    BR-RE
    DVD+-RW
    24" 1920x1200 Samsung
    24" 1920x1200 Dell
    Adobe Master Collection cs5

without the cs5 upgrade or monitor, this totals right at 1600.00

Drobo S with 5 2TB WD 7200rpm drives - eSATA for everything but OS and programs
4 2TB bare drives with drop in station for long term storage
Canon 7d (both video and still) - (Zoom H4N for audio)

    Dell 24" LCD - 180
    CS5 upgrade - 900
    Drobo - 1200
    Canon 7d - 1400
    Zoom H4N - 300

    total upgrade cost:
    5600.00

I know the video card is not the greatest, but I do not consider gaming the primary reason for this rig. My question is, does anyone have any real experience with a drobo? Will it be able to satisfactorily serve up HD footage to premeire and After Effects? Is the upgrade worth it at all? Anyone have any experience with the 7d? I already own a few lenses from my rebel, so it is a natural upgrade, and replaces two pieces of equipment. I am looking to spend some $$$ on higher end glass to get better shallow depth of field later on. What am I missing?

    ok then....

I got all the equipment in, and I have spent the past three days transferring 9TB of data all over the place... the i7 screams in premiere with HD footage... and renders in less than 1/3 the time.... awesome machine. now to buy the canon 7d.
