  • A platoon leader's plea to anyone who will listen.

If we are running an organized platoon, please do not purchase a vehicle without first requesting to do so. I dont know how many times I have given platoon-wide orders and had multiple people run and pull a vehicle. Sometimes our mission could use that vehicle, sometimes it could not. Regardless, it is incredibly frustrating to order a platoon level gal drop, and wonder why we only have 2 squads of drop with 3 extra galaxies, 8 reavers, a vanguard, 2 lightnings, and a liberator. Those are numbers off the top of my head,I am not referring to one person or incident, because this happens every time I try to lead.

All I am asking is that you ask before you pull the vehicle. Odds are, I will grant the request. Not always, but most of the time. It may not seem like a big deal, but as any platoon leader can attest to, I am finding it difficult to coordinate the platoon objective, delegate squad objectives, keep up to date with the map to make sure we are where we need to be, and coordinate with the coalition. Not to mention deal with the incoming threats, and the people that want to do their own thing. Im not trying to complain, just please try to do whatever you can to make the PL's job a little easier, and ask before you pull a vehicle, because it is hard for us to keep track sometimes.

Also, squad leaders, please ask before taking your squad somewhere else. If it is still relevant to our current objective (like taking a satellite outpost) then odds are I will grant your request. But not only is it hard to keep up with when nobody asks, it is really frustrating to have an SL just say "Im taking my squad to ____". Not to mention it violates chain of command. Respecting chain of command is another thing you can all do that will make the PL's job a wee bit easier.

Feel free to post your own PSA's regarding what SL's and SM's can do to make PL'ing easier. I am actually a pretty meek fellow and dont like bossing people around, and I especially dont like reprimanding people in-game, so it would be good if we could go ahead and get some of this stuff out of the way ahead of time.
May you be covered in the dust of your Rabbi.

I apologize, I am one that pulls a Gal once I hear in VOIP, "We need 2 Gals", I usually speak up and say Ill get one, but sometimes I think my Voip acts up. I will await confirmation from now on, I have never lead a squad or Platoon here in PS2 and realize this job can be a logitstical nightmare with trying to move 48 people (1 Platoon) to the correct locations with the right vehicles.

This plea is also for squad leaders. Far too many times, people grab vehicles without asking, which leaves the squad significantly less effective as an infantry unit. Granted, sometimes the situation requires a vehicle, but not always. It would be nice if people at least asked the squad leader. If all you want to do is run a vehicle, then form a vehicle squad. The focus doesn't always have to be on infantry, but if you join an infantry squad, expect to play as infantry.

This is not directed at anyone in particular, its just something I have noticed.

I appreciate it, but dont feel like I am personally calling you out on this, pretty much everybody does it. Heck, when I am SM, sometimes it slips my mind and I do it. Besides, it can be hard to get people to volunteer to pilot a gal, so kudos to you for stepping up. I just want everybody in the future to get confirmation, just to ease the burden of the "logistical nightmare". Keep in mind that the logistics are a little harder for me, since I am also helping coordinate with anywhere from 100-300 other soldiers in coalition TS. I dont mean to be a stickler for the little details, or seem angry (trust me, I am not angry about it :) ) but as a PL, every little detail that can help make our job easier is appreciated. The less distracted the PL has to be with stuff like this, the more he can be focused on the objective, and the platoon will get more time in battle, and everyone will have a better experience.

An exception to the vehicle request thing is if you are in a dedicated armor squad. For instance, the other night I was running a full platoon with squads that had dedicated roles. Al's squad was dedicated armor, so what his squad pulled was up to him.

Certain people have awesome GALs. Like Arc here... you want his gal.

Can I make a corollary request as an armor-specialist? If the squad is pulling vehicles with secondary weapons, please discuss gunner positions. Few things as sad as 12 vannies with one occupant each getting hosed by air because the drivers are all busy looking down the road.

After doing some pubbie leading tonight, I have to say I agree. Its really annoying to have a random smattering of unupgraded lightnings and random reavers when you're trying to do an infantry squad. I even had to kick a TG member because he ignored several request to leave a liberator behind and join the rest of the platoon.

Yeah, best thing to do, is just create your own squad, then run what you want, a specialty squad.

Why not frame the request is that priority should be given to the PL's desires and that if you pull a vehicle be prepared to leave it behind if the situation dictates? IE, if you pull a vehicle and the CO's plans dictate that the vehicle isn't used, get your butt out of the vehicle, despawn, and complete the objectives.

It is something I do as a matter of course. Absent an absolute directive otherwise I will often pull my HEL as that is where I've sunk the most certs. But if you ask me to board a Gal or hold a point, IE, actions which cannot be completed by a HEL, I'm out of my armor, it is despawned, and I'm there on foot, no questions asked.

While that isnt a bad plan, the problem is that when other people see you pulled a vehicle, they are gonna start pulling their own, and will get frustrated when I ask them to deconstruct, possibly even start arguing the orders. And no, that's not just a pubbie thing :/

Note that what I am mainly talking about is when we are at warp gate. If we are defending a watchtower under heavy attack, I am not gonna care if somebody pulls a lightning. But I seriously have yet to have just ONE time that I have recalled a full platoon to warp gate, and not have someone grab a vehicle, no matter how many times I say not to.

Re: A platoon leader's plea to anyone who will listen.

Well, to be fair, the warp gate is the one time I don't pull a vehicle because normally, if we're at the WG, we're regrouping and I have no idea what we're doing. We could be moving to another continent, doing a gal drop, etc. It's only when we're out in the field and moving fast that I default to the HEL absent explicit directions otherwise because, well, blowing things up with 100mm HE is pretty much always needed. >.>

The other issue with pulling vehicles that are not needed is that you use up resources and when the group reaches the objective those resources might be needed, not to mention the cool-down timer.

The occasional lightning with the rest of the platoon isn't a problem and generally quite useful. However, when running infantry and over the course of a push you slowly accumulate more and more random vehicles until the point where your platoon has slowly morphed into an armor platoon, it starts to get kinda annoying.

I will say, though, that having around 6 Sundies last evening was hilarious.
