  • Past Week: Debriefing Request

    Back from Paris.

How have things been the past week? Any major changes in participation levels during the week? Any major changes in game dynamics?

It was odd wandering around Paris for a week feeling like I was inside Battlefield 3.

You haven't missed much. We are fielding more than one platoon on Fridays now and coordinating with ACCE. The last updates added new shotguns and revolvers. Map telemetry has been improved. All cert awards have been replaced with a new currency - Candy, an in-game consumable item. All flags now take a set amount of time to cap no matter how many people are there, and the influence pie has been removed from capture timers.

One of those is a joke.

Two of those are a joke actually, but only one intentionally by the above poster.

        Re: Past Week: Debriefing Request

Curious. I know the issue has been raised elsewhere, and the changes are only a few of many to come, but is the general feeling that the game is being "dumbed-down" to accommodate younger players?

If so, what proof that it is a marketing (or intelligence) or mass-market issue or simply very poor game design decisions?

We have plenty of precedents for a long history of bad design (and some great design) in gaming.

It would hardly be surprising if the underlying issue is not simply a combination of cost-cutting, poor management, and bad design (god knows there is enough of these factors in any industry -- to the point of being normative).

I don't think it's a dumbing-down thing. I can't imagine the influence system being a detriment to player retention. Certainly not moreso than getting rolled by a zerg, abused by a griefer, or plain old technical issues. Reading the devs' comments, I think they are trying to adapt the game mechanics to how people are actually playing the game. So, in this instance, having a standardized capture timer will slow down the zerg (you have to stick around to get the points), and will make it harder for a faction who wins the pop-limit lottery to roll a continent during an alert.

Tactically, it means there's less of an impetus to surround a facility to get the influence bonus. However, it does mean that you know a large force will be camping on a location for longer, which gives you an option to mount a counter-attack. It also makes it more likely that facilities will get cut off from adjacency while waiting for the timer, unless the defenders make a concerted effort to watch the FRONT, not just the FLAG.

Paris only reminds me of the opening scene of Team America ever since.

            That aside.

They fixed the squadlist. You can now tab trough all pages, not just the top of the list. So all squads are accessible now. It is a huge difference and part of why we have ran multiple platoons on about half the nights this week. It mostly depends on whether we have enough outfit SL's stepping up. If we do, we can can fill a platoon and more easily on most nights.

It should be mentioned that the VS have come out in force on Indar and they will continue to dominate the map for whatever reason.
