  • PLanetside 2 coming out for Playstation 4

I'm sure everyone has heard the news by now. So I was wondering what you guys think about it. Anyone switching over?

If PS2 starts to go down the drain because each new update continues to dumb the game down, this will be reason why.

      Not sure if serious...

It's legit (according to the Internet at least :D). As long as Sony keeps the console version separate from the PC one I'll be happy. If they start to merge the games together for purposes of cross platform play then that'll be the point when I'll bail out.

Confirmed 99% no cross-over play. Console dev could help pc dev... etc... I might check it out but there is no way I'd pick controller over m/kb for a game like this if I have a choice.
          Home/Gaming PC: [email protected]/Asus Rog Maximus VIII Formula/EVGA GTX 1080 SC/Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB)/Corsair Carbide Quiet 600Q/Corsair RM750i/Acer XB270H 27"/BenQ G2400W 24"/Sound BVlaster ZX/Samsung 850 Pro SSDs x2/Samsung 950 Pro x1/Win10 Pro 64bit/Saitek X52/TrackIR3: Pro-TrackClip Pro/

What makes no sense is the no cross play. I don't care what they say; do it, just allow mouse/keyboard support for it, I'm pretty sure Dust 514 did that.

Its not like some people don't choose to play with a Controller on the PC.

KB/M > controller... That's why. You would get a huge influx of console kiddies and they would be mopped up by the PC crowd and farmed for certs and K/D ratio. After about a month of this the pop from consoles would drop to the point that only those with a KB/M would still be playing. It would be a complete and total failure to do cross platform game.

In the twitter post that announced this, the dev also noted that this will help with PC optimization. It is very sad that this is what it takes to get it done. I would have liked to see, we are optimizing the hell out of Planetside 2 in the next few months BECAUSE we want to push it to PS4 which is never going to be as powerful / modular as you PC customers. So now we just need to wait for PS4 to have a cleaner running game.

Also +1 for the Futurama Fry shifty eyes vid.

If it does well on PS4, that'll spur development of content for the game on PC, which I can only assume will be shared across them, so that's a positive. It's also a good indication that Sony thinks the game is doing well and will continue to do well, which is a great thing for the ongoing health of the game.

I've got another reason cross platform play ain't happening: PS2 is @#$%ing complex. I've got a gamepad for my PC and I tried mapping my flight controls to it just to see if it'd work... and it was a MESS. I barely had enough buttons, and even then I had to drop functionality. If I had to play the whole game with a gamepad, I'd miss out on a lot of functionality.

They're going to need a whole new interface, and they'll likely have to drastically alter how many features--like squad and communication management--work in order to port correctly, and I suspect that may make interfacing the two versions awkward at best.

As for the "dumbing down for the consoles" comments... I know this is a PC gaming crowd, but can we can the elitism please? There's nothing inherent to consoles that makes depth-filled games impossible or even more uncommon. The limitations of consoles come down to hardware and input restrictions. The former typically impacts visual fidelity and programming effort--optimizing for consoles is typically a highly specialist skill and a long, painful process with lots of compromises--while the latter doesn't actually impact game depth directly. Depth filled games can have simple interfaces, and complicated interfaces don't guarantee depth. In fact, having lots of buttons is usually the sign of sloppy design. Designing games for a console controller requires paying very close attention to the basic interface with the game, which generally just leads to better games.

@ TYHBoom: Optimizing a game is a finicky and infuriatingly difficult process, especially on the PC given the wide range of hardware. An optimization that gives a framerate boost to one person might actually tank it for another person! Because of that (and the ironic result of mentioning performance boosts in an update triggering perceptions of the opposite, because people make those decisions in the opening days where there's a spike of game traffic) the PS2 team doesn't even announce their optimizations in patch notes anymore. You can be confident that optimization work is happening behind the scenes, though. It's a significant burden on their player-base, so they're more than aware of the issue, and they've got people on their team who LIVE for optimization. Just don't expect miracles, because all the low-hanging fruit has already been dealt with.

Even so, developing for a console will give them an opportunity they don't have right now: a stable platform to target. There's a lot of optimizations they can do there that they can't elsewhere as a result (and you can BET they'll exploit them, since you absolutely cannot afford poor performance on a console), and there's a high probability that along the way some of the compromises and techniques they'll develop will be applicable on our end. I don't hold out much hope there, honestly, because platform specific optimizations are hard to generalize, but it'd be welcome if it happened.

I don't like this at all. But then I am a proud PC gamer only. Consoles? what are those? The only console I know is the command line. I am hoping that SOE keeps their attention on the PC version and doesn't leave us fending for ourselves.
