  • Developer's Roadmap Updated

While working on performance updates SOE put everything else on hold and moved all upcoming features to unscheduled status. Now that the performance updates are completed (smaller, individual tweaks will still happen, mainly back end stuff), they've updated their Roadmap to once again give us an idea of the direction of PS2 and a rough idea of when to expect these features.

SOE have also added a "Status" notification to each thread in the Roadmap, to give us a better idea on their progress and likelihood it will meet the date.

As a way to learn what our players are looking for, excited about, and worried about in upcoming features, Roadmap has been terrific tool for us. However, so far Roadmap hasn't been particularly accurate about when those features would be available to players - some of that is due to changing systems due to the feedback from the Roadmap, some is due to changing priorities on the dev team, such as pooling all our effort behind the O:MFG update. We're going to be making the following changes to the way we use Roadmap.

    1. From now on, most features on Roadmap will be kept under unscheduled until we're more certain of a solid release date for them. What that means is when you see something move to "March" you will be able to reasonably expect that feature is ready to be released in March. That isn't a guarantee of course, things will still shift from time to time, but since things will be in Unscheduled until we are very confident that we can hit the dates, this will be a lot more accurate.
    2. Roadmap entries will now have a field for "Status" so you can see what state it's in. We will have statuses for: Designed, In Progress, Internal Testing, On Public Test and Complete.
Taken from a pre-Christmas post: Next Game Update, Holiday events, Roadmap updates and more!

Additionally, after some changes to their patching system, updates should be released more often and more consistently.

What does this mean for you?

Well for starters, it means we'll be more rapidly respond to bugs & balance issues in the game without having to rely on hotfixes as much. We'll also be able to release new content more frequently and consistently. Each individual update will be smaller and more focused, with fewer moving parts that can break, which we hope will greatly decrease the number of bugs being introduced when we update. This doesn't mean that we're not still working on bigger features and larger content pieces, we definitely are and they'll be slotted into the weekly schedule as they're ready to be released. As part of this change we are also going to be updating and playtesting on Test server a lot more often in the future, as always, your playtesting assistance and feedback on the test server will be greatly appreciated.

One final note, the first couple of these weekly updates are going to be a bit smaller than what you can expect to see later on, as we're still shaking off the holiday cobwebs and getting used to the new development processes.

Some of the larger features slated for the next few months: Amp Stations being iterated on (with 2 new versions on Indar), ESFs, Mission System, Amerish, Liberators, Biolabs

The squad spawning in squad vehicles is something I don't really like the sounds of (and I've posted as such in the feedback thread).

I did notice that on the Liberator page they mention the idea of having the option to replace the main gun with a bunch of rumble seats. THAT'S an interesting thought, turning the liberator into a more manueverable squad transportation vehicle. It's tough to see it competing with the Galaxy, though... Liberators aren't THAT much more mobile than Galaxies, and without the primary gun the pilot and gunner weapons are unlikely to provide any useful close air support to a disembarked infantry group. On the other hand, Liberators are easier to get a hold of. Could go either way for me.

seeing that theres no top gun on it, and compared to the other MBT, it looks alot bigger in size so its an easier target to hit. So no I would not trade my precious Vanguard.

I would, it looks like it has the ability to aim higher up and looks better for Soloing as well. But I still gotta save up certs for some new guns on my Reaver

Apparently SOE said no to artillery during the developer ask-me-anything on reddit.

                  RoyAwesome, PS2 Player:
No on Artillery or Bombers, they don't want to add more 'i couldn't do anything about that' deaths
[PSA] There was a developer AMA on Reddit. Here are the notes

That's really a shame. I still think some limited forms would be okay, such as SL / PL call-ins ala BF series. People coped in that game, and it would add a completely new layer of objectives, to destroy and protect those assets.

I agree with you Ghost, that tank looks good (not impressively so), but does not appear to do anything amazing. Shouldn't this be the rarer, 3 man tank? Shouldn't it be more powerful for those reasons? It doesn't even appear to have a secondary gun/function, let alone third.

BF2142's expansion had a brilliant, large vehicle that had many guns and could be spawned on. I can't remember entirely, but I know it was limited by moving at crawl speed. It also had several panels which were the only places it could... take damage or repair? Not sure.

Here's a size comparison on that Colussus tank.

                    http://imgur.com/a/RubSc

Based on pictures of it taken from different angles, it's probably going to have more than one secondary turret. It's got (I think) five spots that at least look like hardpoints for regular secondaries. Obviously we have no real info anyways, but speculation is fun, right? Personally, I think this tank will happen after the resource revamp does, and that as a part of that revamp we might get some tools that can allow this tank to be a significant investment. It might be cool for multiple players to pool resources to get a Colussus or something like that.

                      Look at this pic, Jengles:

The Colossus appears to have pads on it, one on the turret and one on each tread gimble, that look like they're mounts for secondary turrets.

Hmm, I guess so. 5 turrets firing could potentially look impressive and be powerful.

That's probably as much as people, myself included, were thinking - a big tank. But now I find I'd like to care about it more than that, I hope the tank serves some support purpose as well, so lots of people care about keeping it alive.

Wrel's comment that SOE are playing it safe with PS2 has stuck with me.

                          Re: Developer's Roadmap Updated

Another thing to consider is that with the size differential comes the render distance differential as well. So in essence you could sit at distance and wail away on this thing, just like you can do with Gals in AA. Now if this was one of those things that a infil could sneak up to and hack the driver out, that would be sweet.........but the infil revamp is another thing that is almost 6 months old and has been placed on unscheduled.........again.

Can you imagine a ridge line of HAs targeting this thing then all of a sudden................12 rockets streaming towards it? Impressive.........

You're thinking of the A3 Goliath IFV. (could not link to the wiki page sorry.)
It has five hardpoints that could be damaged to reduce the amount repaired per second, was a mobile spawn point, with a EMP canon on it.
It was always a challenge to ambush it when it was fullied manned with escort.

This tanks looks a bit like the Goliath and the Fatboy II (from Supreme commander II) mixed in together.
I was thinking of faction special weapons for the secondary guns not currently in use.
Or like the GDI Mammoth from Command and conquer Kanes' wrath with special mounts that change depending on faction and kit, maybe.

Cant wait for the Armor squads with one.

                              Re: Developer's Roadmap Updated

This vehicle would almost be an armour squad by itself if it's got those 5 secondary guns. I think they're definitely thinking "mobile battleship" with that kind of design, but I've got to wonder if that's REALLY more threatening or tactically interesting than 3 MBTs.

Hopefully they do something more interesting with it than "just a bigger tank".
