  • What is on your SW:TOR wishlist?

Good solo play? Good group play? End-game raiding? PvP?

I'm really hoping that they look in extreme detail at what went wrong with SW Galaxies during the development process.

Some interesting excerpts from that link:

For me it all started to go down hill when they added a Alpha profession called "Jedi". Ever since then, the game was just about balancing Jedi and then it turned into Jedi vs Bounty Hunter patches. Because they were the Alpha class, all people did was spend their days grinding their Jedi. I would have preferred the game without playable Jedi and everyone would have focused on their professions and playing the game.
When you include an Alpha class in a MMOG, you are setting yourself up for trouble. You can not have one class that is fundementally more powerful then all the others. Why not? Because then that becomes the goal of just about everyone playing, to be in the uber A-Class. The folks who do not want to be part of the A-Class simply leave. It starts a downward spiral for the rest of the game, especially ones with player run economies. In retrospect, I think the Dev team pretty well figured this out and dumbed down the rest of the game (i.e. crafters) to adjust to the ever rising Jedi population. In the end, what do you have left? Jedi, those grinding to become Jedi, and non-Jedi.
The thread is quite long and contains a lot of interesting information. I'd like it if any ex-SWG players here at TG could chime in, I'm really interested to hear your thoughts on this.

Something that's been on my mind is how the Lore department plans on working with the Dev team to make a fully geared, max level Jedi balanced with a fully geared, max level Bounty Hunter without undermining the lore concept of a Force user being fundamentally more powerful than any other being. Sure, they could just simply tone down the amount of damage a Jedi does with his lightsaber, but should Boba Fett really be defeating Darth Vader?

Re: What is on your SW:TOR wishlist?

I'd like to see a good player run economy. I'd like to see player crafted items always be better than loot drops. Make the loot be components of items, or let the loot be stuff that can enhance a player crafted item, but keep player crafted items important and necessary.

Implement decay on items (including weapons and armour), don't have risk free death.

Look at the original version of crafting in SWG (before they brought in the Anti decay kits) or look at the crafting within EVE Online. Yes TOR is set during a war and there will be an emphasis on combat, but don't forget the support needed for combat (armoursmiths, weaponsmiths, enhancements) and items to promote individuality of your character.

I'd hate to see everyone running around in the same clothes/armour and with the same weapons.

As they are implementing Bounter Hunters - I'd like to see the implementation of player bounties - once you reach a certain level BH you would be forced to go PvP, give other classes the one time option of going PVP, so if you don't like PvP play you aren't forced to do it (unless you choose BH and choose to progress to a certain level).

Re: What is on your SW:TOR wishlist?

I disagree with his points. Jedi were extremely difficult to get and even harder to keep at first. You had to hide like crazy. Everyone i played with was just fine in the other classes. In fact people loved the classes quite a bit. It started going downhill when buildings *never* disappeared aka ghost towns. There weren't any vehicles to travel around with yet so you had to run everywhere. It created an empty feeling to the world in a lot of places. Many people just had way to much space and not enough people.

Then they started changing the game with the CU and then NGE. I think the first pitfall was taking out one of the classes or completely changing them to the point of obscurity. I don't recall which one exactly though.

This game will be about jedi but not like you think. If you take kotor as your basis, you will realize that you die a lot even as a jedi. Sure some things are trivial but it's not all powerful and that will be a shock to a lot of people.

I hope they go all out on crafting. I want make high tech items.

I hope there is a robust PvP system. Similar to Age of Conan, but actually playable :)
And ability to make Sith in the mold in one of the 3 Jedi classes in KOTOR: Sentinel, Consular or Guardian.

That's a good point Vulcan. Most of us think of Jedis in terms of Episode IV and above, where all the remaining Jedi were only the ones strong enough to survive (and therefore powerful to heroic proportions). Yet in the times of the Old Republic they were much more common, and while not pushovers by any means, it wasn't exactly thousands of Darth Vaders walking around.

I'm hoping for multiple subclasses as well Fl1p, and hopefully that shows itself in some form or another.

Zhoed, I wonder as well whether or not they will have PvP and PvE specific servers like they do in WoW, or if it will be somehow all jumbled together into one.

Another thing I'm really interested in is how they handle spaceships (if they choose to have this at all). I know they introduced this in SWG but I'm not sure how well that went given the general state of SWG.

Re: What is on your SW:TOR wishlist?

in my view the space aspect of SWG was the only thing they didn't ruin.

Some of the missions were overly long (particularly if you were doing them solo - nothing like taking out wave after wave of fighters only to die 40mins into a mission and having to land, go get the mission again and then redo :( ) But with a small group it was good fun.

they had a good mix of ships which could be customised with parts (and paint if you werent Imperial) and the combat was pretty good. The larger ships could hold a number of people for those who liked to socialise.

Every now and then I'm tempted to re-sub to SWG just for the space game.

              My wish list...

Everything Star Wars Galaxies had (the original SWG not that CU/NGE bull****)... but with fixes to make the PvP/PvE even. I'm probably going to play this game... but I'm just so tired of the Jedi thing. I wish Lucas made those crap movies first then did the real trilogy so that people would be more excited about the Rebels and Imperials (which is the real heart of the Star Wars universe).

Bah. Anyway... I liked the extent SWG had with profession trees, crafting, and the social emotes/additions. I play those games to play with other people... not hack Rancor with a lightsaber. So hopefully they use what was learned with that before they ruined it with NGE/CU.

Re: What is on your SW:TOR wishlist?

I played SWG for some time. I got into it after the changes were made so i never had anything to compare it too. This game looks better though. It didn't bother me that you could be a jedi in SWG, what bothered me was that there were so many and it was so inconsistant with the storyline. When I think of star wars however, I don't think of rebels and imperials, I think of spaceships and Force-users. (This may be because I love the expanded universe). Anyway back to topic, I would love to see a space game like the one swg had (just please make it impossible to solo a Star Destroyer in a star fighter). The storyline aspects bioware is talking about sound amazing too. Can't wait!

Re: What is on your SW:TOR wishlist?

My understanding is this period is the "dawn" of the jedi and thus it can be expected that Jedi are not uber and are "balanced" with other classess. What I really think they should do is something similar to Left 4 Dead. You have "special" characters which are the human players that are all equally balanced, but then make the ai "mass" like the horde, their real strength is in numbers and in leveraging that to your advantage. This gives the players on both sides a sense of power over the massess, but they remain well balanced as human players vs each other.

you get a cherry but sorry no cake! lol

I highly doubt you will be able to fly around on a jetpack. You will have one for use during combat but not freely i would imagine. I guess we'll see but I will pray with you.

If you guys haven't had the pleasure, take a look at dragon age: origins, mass effect 1 and 2, knights of the old republic and even never winter nights to a small degree. You'll see that what bioware is doing will be something we've never seen in an mmorpg and quite frankly I want that, nothing rehashed from other games. They are delivering so far and those games will give you a taste of what it's in store.
