        Heh, Gamestop's fault, nobody else.

Man I'm so jealous. This is one of those times that I wish my computer were nicer. You say it's fun; tell us more! Even "not bad" would put it miles ahead of Lockdown, but hey, this is Rainbow 6 we're talking about here. One of the best realistic shooter franchises until they screwed it up! TELL US HOW VEGAS IS!

Im askin for it for christmas. Hopefully the multiplayer isnt so laggy like GRAWs was when it came out.

Anyone know of a PC demo coming out at some time? Wouldnt be surprised if they dont release one since the Letdown demo probably kept people away.

Re: Got PC Rainbow Six Vegas

This is someone else review of R6:V game from UBI Forum. But this how I feel about the game.

In my personal opinion, this game is miles above Lockdown, and in some ways superior to Raven Shield and even the original Rainbow Six games. This is a bold statement, but I believe this game does what it sets out to do and that is be a semi-tactical shooter, but one that is more accessible the casual gamer at the same time, but not at the expense of trying to cater to 12-year olds like Lockdown tried to do.

                Let's start with graphics.

The graphics are a mixed bag. Literally. They are a mix of complex polygons (player models) and simple objects as well. The texturing also runs the same gambit with some being high res with normal and bump mapping while others look really low res and washed out.

One thing that should be noted is the SP and MP graphics have entirely different looks to them with the MP being the more "streamlined" of the two to cut down on bandwidth no doubt.

Overall, the graphics are a definite improvement over the blocky and low polygon ones of Raven Shield (2003), which I would expect because this is the Unreal Engine 3.0 being used complete with all of its Shader Model 3.0 glory.

Game play is a mixed bag.

I think the key factor that will determine whether a veteran R6 fan will ultimately like or enjoy this game is they must go into this game knowing it is not the Rainbow Six of Red Storm Entertainment circa 1998... And, this doesn't mean it is a bad game at all. If gamers can separate the R6 label from the game I feel they will have both a good and most importantly fun time playing the game, both SP and MP.

The biggest addition is of course the cover system with third person view. We all know the pros and cons, so I am not going to beat a dead horse.

I will say for those who are still not convinced to at least try it before you knock it. If once you try and still hate it then that is fine. This is one of those game mechanics you must at least try for yourself before you criticize because in all honesty it does add a new depth to the game in both positive and negative ways that will no doubt play themselves out in the coming weeks and months once the MP servers are officially up and more people have bought the game.

The main thing I like about the third person cover system is it gives the player a more "tactile" sense of their environment and allows them a greater sense of virtual awareness -- More so in the physical sense than the visual -- To the environment which most first person shooters lack in my opinion. Being able to hug corners, walls and other surfaces and peek/lean out to fire may not be completely original, but it gives Vegas a greater sense of the player being in a real (virtual) world instead of just being a disembodied gun floating through space. Could they have used an alternative and better system? Of course. But they didn't. So, this is what we have to work with and I don't think it is as bad as a lot of us originally thought.

The downside to the game play in SP is the fact it is a very linear and script-driven experience which we all knew going into this game if you've been keeping up with the Xbox360 information.

However, even with it being linear, the way the maps are designed helps keeps the illusion of it being non-linear because a lot of the spaces you fight in are fairly wide-open in scale (even indoors like Casinos) and actually do have a few different entry points to use to your advantage once you spawn into the level at the predesignated "safe zone" away from the action. The only thing which takes the player out of the action are the scripted ambush encounters that play out each time you reach a specific trigger spot... But even these are different each and every time in terms of how the Tangos come at you, where they come from and how many there are which gives slightly more replay than if it was the same damn thing each and every play through.

If we put game play pros and cons aside, what I really like about Vegas is the overall presentation. I don't mean the scripted, "interactive movie". What I mean is there are a lot of details Chaddi Lebois (Raven Shield) and team took the time to get right to immerse the player into the world of Counter-Terrorism and modern CQB combat.

For instance, the AI of both the Tangos and your SP Team mates is top notch this time... And this isn't just marketing speak like most games tout.

You don't have to babysit your two AI comrades because not only are they good shots, but they also react in non-scripted ways to what the enemy AI is doing. If the enemy is trying to flank you and you are busy looking the other way they will tell you and then adjust their positions to meet that enemy who is trying to come around your backside. They also seek cover intelligently. No more of the RvS, brain dead AI that just stands out in the open and has poor peripheral vision that lets a tango slightly off to the side wipe them all out with a single sidearm. No, the Vegas team AI is outstanding and has put me out of business as far as AI enhancement mods... And I am glad Wink

A perfect example of how smart the team AI is, is if the Tangos throw a smoke grenade to give themselves cover to move, your team mates will automatically switch to thermal vision to spot them through the smoke! You don't have to tell them this! They know what smoke is, why it is being used and how to counter it! To me, this is the level of AI the R6 series should be receiving from hear on out.

Conversely, the Tango AI is also very smart depending on what mode you play.

In SP they react like real soldiers and use cover intelligently just like you and your team can. They also try and flank you... Really. They don't just dig themselves in. They will try and flank you while one suppresses you (and your team) which is something most AI just doesn't do in other games for one reason or another. The enemy AI is better than that of Far Cry and F.E.A.R. respectively given the limitations of the game's environments.

The Tango AI is similar in MP CO-OP Terrorist Hunt mode, but more along the lines of trying to simulate an MP match as they move around a lot more and will hunt the player down instead of just stay in one place. This is a nice twist and something I even suggested along time ago about adding MP Bots to help beginners out. They aren't anywhere near as good as veteran R6 gamers, but at least it is a start compared to the previous games and can only get better in my opinion if UBI Montreal continues developing the AI in this manner.

                That's basically it.

I know I have been very critical of this game and I am not doing a complete 180 as there are a lot of issues that still bother me and that are going to be worked out as the MP goes live in few days/weeks... But overall, the game really is a mix of Raven Shield and more modern, mainstream shooters, but not in the bastardized way I had originally predicated. The game play feels solid and is a blast to play if you can separate the original R6 games from this one and accept it for what it is.

Why in the world would you ever forego the Mouse/Keyboard combo for the XBOX360 controller. WOW!

i love my mouse keyboard combo, but ill tell ya what, the 360 works very well for this game. Maybe not as precise aiming but for everything else like movement and such is awesome.

WHAT! This game can't run without Pixel Shader 3.0? I think Ubisoft is pushing it up too far this time.

Yes. Clearly Ubisoft crossed the line when they... uh... didn't program the engine...

Really, you can't have everything your way all the time. Either graphics get better over time and eventually stop supporting cards with older shader models (like mine) or they improve only marginally and people complain that the game is ugly and Ubisoft should have at least put some effort in.

I don't have PS3.0 because I switched from a nVidia 6800 to a ATI Platinum x850. The 6800 has PS3.0 but it is slower than the ATI card. Oh well, I'll upgrade soon hopefully, I want a Core 2 Duo E6600.
