  • GTA: IV for PC

Anyone else picked this up yet? It runs quite well on my system from what I have seen so far, only a little FPS drop during heavy intense fights/ traffic or certain weather. Dont own a console so this is my first time playing it but I do like it alot so far. With mods and such and the MP this should keep me entertained for quite a while.

I am still downloading it off of Steam as I'm typing this.

The game is literally over 14 GBs. There must be 5 DVDs in the retail box.

I'm only downloading at about 310 KB/s, so in about another 4-5 hours (middle of the early morning), it should be done. I should be able to play it and post some of reactions to the PC version tomorrow before 1 pm CST.

        Re: GTA: IV for PC

The game is extremely resource intensive.

Some quick pros and cons after playing it for over two hours.

        Pros:
        • Better graphics quality than that of the Xbox 360 version
        • "Resources" meter that show the minimum amount of VRAM the game will use
        • Ability to use a 360 controller alongside a mouse and keyboard seamlessly

        Cons:
        • Requires more than 14 GBs of hard drive space
        • Game will eat anywhere from 2 GBs to 2.5 GBs of RAM (my usage spiked from 28% to 86%)
        • Really needs a high-end rig to be able to run the game with high settings, long draw distance, high detail draw, and high shadow details.
        • CPU usage is high (at least on my E8400 dual-core)

Even though I have 4 GBs of RAM and a 8800GT (512 MB), I had to scale stuff down to the following settings in order to play smoothly at over 30 fps:
        • Resolution: 1280 x 1024 (60 hz)
        • Game Detail: Medium
        • Texture Detail: Medium
        • Draw Distance: 21
        • Detail Draw Distance: 20
        • Lighting: 18 (think that was the setting after Detail Draw)
        • Shadow Depth: 1

Otherwise, the game would drop below 30 fps every 4-5 seconds constantly. I really wonder if they redesigned it so to play it on higher settings, you would need a $300 graphics card, a $300 quad-core and 8 GB of RAM.

          Re: GTA: IV for PC

Acreo they recommend setting stuff at medium for today's hardware. They have the super high settings for next generation hardware that's only barely available atm.

I pull my view distance down to 10 and you can't even tell the difference except for higher FPS.

Textures medium and render quality medium or high.

The worst thing so far is no controller support except the 360 controller.. I just bought a cordless rumblepad 2 weeks ago too.

I have a 360 controller, how does the PC pick up the signal/recognise the 360 hardware ?

You have to install the drivers from the CD or go online (to Microsoft's site) and download the driver needed.

Once you install the driver, all you have to do is plug in the controller, wait about 2 minutes, and then you'll be able to use it in game (any game that supports a 360 controller).

This is gangster, crime lord, conquer the city, do whatever you want all in one game. You can't really put GTA into words tbh, if you've never played it then I highly recommend trying it out.

It's more like a Driver + Third Person Shooter + RPG with a semi-dynamic universe to play in (Liberty City, which is based off of New York, even has its own mock of Times Square).

I think the word you're looking for is "Sandbox".
                      xD
I think I'll be picking this up after Christmas.

There is a storyline, so I don't think any label fits it, not even "sandbox".
