  • Beyond the Red Line...

I'm sure there's a few that have heard of this game. I just found out about it by clicking on a link through a related video on YouTube. But, for those of you that like Battlestar Galactica, you might appreciate this:

What is... the true endeavor to make the best space combat simulator a fan could want? Yes. Apart from the "paltry test release", 3rd party missions, campaigns, and fork mod(s)*, the vision made real has yet to come.

Um, paltry? Are you sure it's not 'poultry'?

The Beyond the Red Line demo is a stand-alone conversion of Freespace 2. A test run; an experimental release; you know, just a demo.

Is this all free and stuff?

Yes, and it's a two-part ordeal. Once upon a time, the Beyond the Red Line development team had a demo phase that established many things. Those established things evolved, and resulted in a focus to obtain what was once thwarted: a full game. The full Beyond the Red Line game is a separate entity in that it is being made by discriminating fans... for the discriminating fan.

OMG, so when will it be done?

    ...Excuse me?

Kidding. If you're in for the long haul, you'll be glad you stuck around.

We thought we were saved. A week after the Nuclear Holocaust our rag-tag fleet of civilian ships, led by the captain of the Scylla, wandered aimlessly through space. We were overcrowded, under-armed, low on fuel and nearly out of food. Our handful of battered Vipers were only minor nuisance to the daily Raider attacks and after a week, when the Base ship appeared, most of us were resigned to our fate.

But then, appearing like a savior from the Gods themselves, a lone battlestar pounded through the Cylons’ defenses. We cheered the arrival of Battlestar Pegasus; her crew had saved us. Or so we thought...

Scylla was first. We watched from the observation deck of the charter liner Requiem, as the Raptors docked with it. We caught a brief burst of wireless comms from Scylla, frantic and distorted, but the message was clear: get away. It was too late; when Pegasus' Raptors found Requiem a few minutes later, they brought nothing that gave us reason to praise the Gods. Mechanics arrived to claim Requiem's vital systems, and Colonial Marines--with guns drawn--claimed warm bodies. Death at the mechanical hands of the Cylons would have been better.

Drafted and pressed into service, your only hope of survival is to fall in line and train to join the ranks of the elite Viper pilots of Battlestar Pegasus. Get a taste of the action that awaits you in the upcoming main campaign with intense single- and multiplayer missions. Will you become one of Pegasus’ elite, or will you give your life in the vast, cold battleground of deep space?

I personally like the "Two weeks" comment (which is a Money Pit reference). It looks like the game is still being worked on (I saw a post from two of the dev's on YouTube as late as 1/25/09). They've implemented more cockpit details, and even TrackIR support. Which I wish I only had the money for. :P

But anyway, I hear this thing has been in the works for years. They say they have Capital ships in, and a bunch of new missions. Of course though, that's not released yet. You do get to test the demo out (if you haven't already) with three missions.

I liked the way they set this thing up. It looks pretty solid and dead on with the tv show if anyone has watched it. If you haven't tested the demo out, I'd give it a go. It'll keep you entertained for maybe a couple hours. With any luck the full game will go out here soon.

    A Few Videos:

Those are a few decent ones. There's a slew of them on YouTube and that's where I saw some of the responses from the Dev's. I'm hoping that they're still cracking on this because it has potential to be the best BSG game to exist (not to mention a decent space sim).

that demo has been out a while. It's decent but the controls are very weird if not a pain in the ass.
