Research armour and weapons, and stun enemies as much as possible - you can steal their weapons which saves you having to build your own. Light plasma rifles early on are incredible.

Try to be building satellite uplinks or satellites pretty much all the time, and keep one satellite spare on the ground - that way, if a country suddenly panics, you can quickly send a satellite there to calm it down a few days before your monthly report.

GameInformer gave it top strategy game for 2012 I believe.

BTW thanks fo everyone that gave me tips for my Ironman play through. I've put it aside for right now and am playing the excellent Warspace Extension mod. If you haven't tried it yet I would highly recommend it.

There needs to be some really dynamic and/or compelling multiplayer in there for me to make it worthwhile.

            It does look good though!

I've played a whole lot more for a lot less... at least I already know I like the game play associated with XCOM.

The price is $30 for the PC, at least according to IGN
