  • Expert Mode and the Bravo Server.

    Hello.

    While playing on your excellent Bravo server, we have had some talks about the benefits of lowering the AIs Skill VRS the Loss in immersion, when dropping the in-game difficulty to anything lower than Expert Mode.

    I explained to Some people how Altering the servers default.arma2profile file allows you to lower the skills of the Default AI on the server. Although you get to keep the immersion of Expert mode.

    The default.arma2profile can be called any name as specified in the launch command line.
    The default.arma2profile contains server difficulty levels and visual settings, friendly and enemy AI quality, HUD, crosshair, 3rd person view, clock indicator and so on.

    Here is an example of a modified default.arma2profile That I have used on server configs before.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------
    This setup makes all difficulty levels basically the same

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------
    HERE IS WHAT EACH THING DOES
    Armor=1; // Gives you improved body armor, tank armor etc
    FriendlyTag=1; // Displays information on friendly units. ONLY WORKS WITH 'Weaponcursor=0', eg crosshair on.
    EnemyTag=1; // Displays information on enemy units
    HUD=1; // Shows you leaders location and your position in formation
    HUDPerm=1; // Shows HUD permanently
    HUDWp=1; // Shows Waypoints right after they're ordered to you
    HUDWpPerm=1; // Shows Waypoints permanently
    WeaponCursor=1; // Shows the crosshair for your weapon
    AutoAim=1; // Enables auto aim when you're not looking through your weapon's scope. Also works with crosshair off
    AutoGuideAT=1; // AT missiles will be automatically guided to their target. If 0, player has to lock onto the target.
    3rdPersonView=1; // This turns 3rd(third) person view and group leader view on or off. Please never talk of this as "3D view" - ArmA is not an arcade game !
    ClockIndicator=1; // Displays the clock indicator on the left of your screen when giving/receiving orders like "At 11 o'clock, enemy man at 200 meters"
    Map=1; // Shows symbols for all objects known to your gruop on the map. This will NOT disable the map itself !
    Tracers=1; // Displays tracers even of small arms that in real life would not have tracers
    AutoSpot=1; // If you're close enough to an enemy, you'll report it without right-clicking
    UltraAI=0; // Enables super AI, hear and see more and increased tactics. This is for both friendly and enemy sides.
    DeathMessages=1; // Displays death messages i.e. playerA kill playerB
    NetStats=1; // Displays score board
    VonID=1; // Displays VON player name in window

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

    THESE ARE THE BITS THAT ALTER THE AI SKILLS (although since 1.60 the precision is debatable if it actually does anything now)

    skillFriendly=0.6;
    skillEnemy=0.6;
    precisionFriendly=0.6;
    precisionEnemy=0.6;

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

    these will not effect the skills of UPSMON AI or server side mode ASR_AI as they redefine all AI skills via scripts after the fact.

    hope this helps in some way :)

                +1 rep as soon as I get to a web browser. Lowering the ai's haktometer without reducing realism or immersion is probably one of the best improvements we could make to the TG arma experience.

That light bulb has served honorably, and anything you say undermines the lighting effort. Why do you hate freedom?!?

                      The alpha server runs Zeus AI server-side, or at least used to. Bravo, however, to my knowledge has never run it.

                          Re: Expert Mode and the Bravo Server.

                          Alpha should mess with this... Especially some people and myself does not like seeing the enemy on the map. But if the difficulty is raised we lose the VonID making it hard to distinguish who is talking where...

                          So veteran mode can be such that VonID is on but enemy markers on the map off..

                            Re: Expert Mode and the Bravo Server.

                            I agree with you about the enemy markers on the map. I don't like the temptation to call out an enemy marked on the map because the ai for your player has spotted an enemy & can track it's movements & mark the map in real time.

                            In the same breath I also like the fact that player names aren't showing up on my screen but it only works if everyone already uses radio procedure to identify themselves as their call sign. This quite often is new to our target alpha pubbies. So, I admit this one should stay on.

                            The 3rd person view I would agree to turn off but for the fact that the visibility out of the Humvee's is so bad....seriously...don't drive a car you can't see out the front window of....lower that seat! There are a few vehicles where you can only see out of a tiny slit...that's where you need the commander and I like that. However, the cars you should be able to see out of more naturally and until that happens I think 3rd person should be left to a gentleman's style agreement on how it shouldn't be used.

                              I agree about the humvees. Why in the world BI hasn't fixed this is beyond me. 3rd person on Alpha just makes sense, but Bravo should just suffer. :)
                              As far as AI - Bravo's Advanced AI is from ACE, no? It is much more difficult than Alpha, and I like it that way. There is a certain satisfaction to be had when succeeding in the face of possible defeat.
