  • Video Promo Shoot Meeting

We need to make a short video again to promote TG ArmA. But it's not as simple as lets join the server and shoot some fraps. We need to discuss the following:
    1. What kind of promo video do we want to make. What is the goal?
    2. What content will do that?
    3. What idea are we going with?
    4. Who is going to be the director and who will be the editor?
    5. How will footage get shared?
    6. Target dates for shooting and editing.

If we nail this down quickly we stand a chance to get something done quick & dirty.

4pm EDT (Toronto time) Saturday June 2nd
Meet in TS to make a plan friends!
(I may be on sooner but I can't commit until this time)

    Re: Video Promo Shoot Meeting

Yay! Thanks Unk for bringing this up! I have PT at noon but I should be out by 1430, so I'll be there, early even.

I'd like to add that I have lots of experience in video production, especially in video games. I also just finished a college level broadcast journalism class in which we produced lots of works, so I may have a good amount to bring to the table.

    no bragging though :P

I'll be around tomorrow now to meet. A buddy needs help at this time so I can't make it. Post what happens or we will try for a meeting before the event tomorrow?

            Re: Video Promo Shoot Meeting

After yesterday was no meeting, we should try to find another day.
Today is too late for me, maybe if we start it in less than 1 hour. Otherwise there is no way for me today.
4pm EDT is about 10PM CET, which is pretty late to start a meeting (inmiddle of the week).
If possible, let's set the meeting to weekend, or a little bit earlier.

              Re: Video Promo Shoot Meeting

Unkl and I just had a discussion in TS about this, we can't possibly to it on TS because of the lack of free time for many people, we are going to keep the conversation to the forums. However we did decide on specifically what we needed to talk about.

First: What will be the premise of the video. What are we shooting for overall.

Second: Video Style. (This can range from a comedy clip to a pure montage)

Third: Assigning roles, scheduling a recording time.

In my opinion, I was personally thinking of setting up a fake firefight. I have the story-board in my head.

Patrol Ops mission, three HUMVEE's (or something) moving through a village. -> Contact reached, forced dismount -> Show the command element assigning a Search & Destroy team to clear the village in the immediate area, as well as assigning a Security Force to watch the HUMVEE's and setting up a base-of-operations. -> Montage of the roles played by each group, when the action hits each.

More can happen from there, and if we have enough people we can even have CAS above head circling around.

The entire thing would be filmed in first person, from the angles of a few different people. They would use there "turning heads" to give a dramatic feel, so the viewer feels inside of the action at all times. We wouldn't stop the action at any point. Just create the mission itself, and strategically place our camera-men into positions. If the mission is well built, we could just place our camera men and record, and if they followed the "Camera-Man SOP".

              That's my two cents, anyway.

                  @Toptonic - Butler:

Yep, I definetly like the idea.

                  Some small thinks I would like to see in the Video are;
-Use of proper tactics and squad movement (compound clearing etc)
                  -Use of handsignals
-ACRE voices (depending on the video-type, maybe just in the background or so)
-proper radio usage (For example, when calling in CAS/A-10, you can hear all the comms between JTAC with alot of numbers and stuff. Should sound cool xD)
-Command structur (maybe CO with RTO, SL and FTLs. Some kind of Operation Base which is set up)

Maybe we could swich between First person and "real camera", depending on situation.
I also like the idea of a journalist.

Maybe we could try to show it from the Journalist-View, and switch to the soldiers helmet cams (we could edit the footage, so it looks like helmet footage.)

That sounds amazing, but I think the first couple of videos should be something easy to produce and get peoples attention, while what you said could be an ongoing project to make it the best it can be.

You're probably right. If done right we could do it in one play through the mission though, then send all the film to one editor.

BUT still, people should pitch other ideas!

                        Re: Video Promo Shoot Meeting

                        Here's my take...

                        1. What kind of promo video do we want to make. What is the goal?
                        2. What content will do that?
                        3. What idea are we going with?
                        4. Who is going to be the director and who will be the editor?
                        5. How will footage get shared?
                        6. Target dates for shooting and editing.
                        1. The goal is a short concise video showing a good squad that is part of a larger command structure.
                        2. A squad level force tasked with clearing a suspected ambush location before a friendly supply convoy moves through the zone.
                        3. The squad does a quick recon as we learn the plan. The squad moves in & discovers 2 FT's of enemy in hiding and an IED. They call up the MRAP from the convoy to deal with the IED and a 3rd FT of enemy attack the MRAP and are quickly taken out. The convoy moves through the checkpoint as we zoom out & see the bird in the air hearing the reports from the convoy passing the waypoint.
                        4. I can or someone else can take this one.
                        5. Not sure how we can share footage. I can run a camera script GCAM to get what I need. If someone else is doing the editing I can find a place to upload.
                        6. Target date: Jun 16 for shooting. Editing asap after that.

Like any good movie the focus would be on the squad leader. You will get to know his FTL's and hear the voice of the Platoon Leader. You will hear the Platoon Leader in contact with the Littlebird escort and the Convoy Commander. You will hear the MRAP vehicle commander as well and get the sense of how these elements are coordinating.

What is required: 6 people as actors, another one to play the part of SL who can also FRAPs & upload the footage. A few extra people to stay off camera for ambient fire or such would be helpful but the smaller we keep the "crew" the easier it is to organize & shoot quickly.

                        ----------------------------------

                        Bring on the more ideas....

                          Re: Video Promo Shoot Meeting

Should it be FirstPerson, Helmet Cam, "Camera Man"/Journalist or "real-movie-camera"?

If we use first person, we maybe get some problems with the "directing", because it would be "one-big-recording". So if something is going wrong, the shot would be destroyed.
Also we could get problems with having a "script", because in one "big-long-shot" its hard to get everything running the way it should be.

But I personally like all the mentioned ideas above.
Especially the journalist, until many of the "real-life-Afghanistan-videos" are from journalists and the soldiers helmet-cams.

I like the journalist idea aswell. But I think it would be really cool to show it from a first person view from two or more people. This way, when something is going wrong you just switch to the other camera. I feel like that would really give you a better understanding of how much planning and teamwork there really is.

Do we already have a date for the actual recording?
Should we make some kind of roster and assigments?
Some kind of "script" or so?

Be advised, I'm not here from June 17th to July 2nd. I will be in Spain... lying at the beach, and diving :D
