  • EOD Specialist???

I think it would be nice to have a custom soldier, an EOD specialist (guy that handles IEDs). They have an up-armored suit, and it would be nice to have some, with a up-armored suit. I think it would fit well in Iraq/Afghanistan maps. What do you think?

That would be pretty sweet....but specific missions would have to be made and some kind of weird IED disarming module to simulate cutting the correct wire. Would be kinda pointless having a really slow soldier with a pistol whos only job is to walk up to an IED and use the action menu to click DISARM IED.
    Love those suits though.

We're all EOD specialists at TG. You walk up to the suspicious object, and if it doesn't explode, it isn't an IED.

In all seriousness, though, I doubt this would get much use. I've never seen IEDs cause much of a change in tactics, as it's usually hard to tell IEDs apart from random map clutter... I'm sure it's realistic, it's just it makes people take them in stride and not really care to check for them unless it's really obvious, like a blue barrel placed by the side of the road.

Yeah I agree that it would look cool and could be used for a very specific mission, but it would require some serious scripting to make it useful. Furthermore those huge suits are rarely used in a combat situation. They are used most often by police or by military EOD units when disarming unexploded ordanance. Currently in modern war, robots are usually used to inspect and disarm suspected IED's. If not special MRAPs with cameras mounted on telecopic arms are used. Only in extreme circumstances is a soldier sent out to investigate and generally they don't have one of those big suits with them. Even if they did, it wouldn't do them much good against most types of IED's. If they lived they'd likely suffer serious blunt trauma injury.
Other forms of investigation of IED's involve simply shoot at the object with incindiary rounds as well as using a rope and grappling hooks to move an object in order to expose wires or the explosives that may be used in such a device.

            What's Hurt Locker?
If you were talking to me, I used to be in a Engineer unit (Combat, Heavy) as a 51B (now 21W). While I was not a 12B (now 21B), my unit's secondary job was combat engineering and as such I did some training in combat engineering (landmine clearing, land mine disarming, demolition, breeching, etc...) both at Ft. Leanordwood, Missouri and at Ft. Hood and Camp Bullis, Texas. But I got out in June 2001 so my knowledge is limited to what I trained on and what my Army buddies tell me about their experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan regarding IED's. Their are other ways also of disarming or detonating IED's involving electrical devices but I don't know much about that stuff.

Ah ok...never seen that movie. Sounds interesting. Dredge, did you ever see any of those EOD guys using those suits? I've only seen them use one at a range in FT. Hood when one our C's (construction vehicle) dug up half-way an old rocket that they had to detonate. I think they had to use the suit because they had to dig a bit on the side to put a C4 charge closer to the warhead section as just the fin of the rocket was sticking up. They let me keep a bizarre looking 20mm round that I found (after they inspected it) so that was cool. They let me keep it cuz the cap on the end had already been expended. I'll have to take a pic of the round to see if anyone can identify it, but thats for another topic.

Yeah they used those suits alot. They are pretty cool, they have fans and stuff in them to keep the guy inside cool. But, since its Army gear they never work

They used them on IED's? I'd hate to be the poor bastard who has an IED detonated on him wearing that suit. Seeing what it does to cars, I'd be fairly certain that the blast wave would crush him rather badly (not to mention sending his body flying).

They have been known to survive the blasts though. If I survived one I would be ordering Lotto tickets like crazy :D

That movie is really good. The EOD guy is a crazy man. There is a scene that he found some wires and when he push them, 8 artillery shells appear all conected. Soon he realizes that the suit is no good agains all those explosive, so he takes it out and say "If I die, I want to die confortable"

                        hehehe

                        cheers, andrei
