  • New Radio SOP *Must Read*

    This sounds AWESOME!!!!!
Question about the direct chat ingame: mines never been that great. I find it very hard to hear people even when theres a lull in battle. I find myself turning my players head from side to side even if the player talking is right next to me. This leads to many missed comms when there is a fire fight going on. Will the new re work of direct chat fix this/be louder at shorter ranges/ smell faintly of lemons?

Yes, there are multiple options available now. If, for instance, you have a Blackhawk right over you, you can switch your Direct Chat to the Yelling Mod and be able to talk OVER the helo. Think of it as you would real life communication. If someone can't hear you just yell :D.

soupy direct chat isn't the in-game direct chat, I believe you talk in TS with the direct chat function. Example: I have my long and short range radios off, When I hit my TS PTT I am using my ingame avatars mouth "direct chat". I need to then select whisper, normal, yell. Once I turn on my radio to broadcast I am now using TS PTT to talk on a radio.

Exactly. TS is gonig the be the work horse for all of the comms. So we will get the clarity and reliability of TS

One thing to consider in missions where the action is taking place more than 10KM from the HQ area, Side/Command may be required for long range UHF, at current all long range radio packs only work out to 10km with no repeating stations.

Or you could set up a radio relay station, like a dude with a radio pack in a humvee half way between both command and the squads. That would be fun, and more realistic. Or go back to WW2 style gameplay and have runners XD

Re: New Radio SOP *Must Read*

                  A few notes of warning:
                  1) Push-to-Talk is known to cause CTDs to those that use it, although it seems to be caused by conflicts with user's combinations of mods, settings and hardware. As such it is hard to pinpoint what's causing these CTD. So, if you use PtT and regularly crash, switch to Voice Activation. Otherwise you should be fine.
                  2) As mentioned above, radios can now either transmit OR receive. This feature is IMPORTANT, so it bears repeating
                  3) Short-range radio range might be boosted in the future: this is because IRL short-range radios usually have a longer reliable range than 500m (generally up to 2km) and that distance was decided as a gameplay feature since the devs of this system tend to play squad and fire-team sized missions. Also this system cannot take into account battlefield conditions (like weather, geographical obstacles and the like) that might reduce the effective max. range, as such there is probably going to be a compromise between 500m and max optimal range in the future.
                  4) At the moment there is no indication when a player is approaching the maximum range of a radio: there is no increasing level of static or similar things. As such extra care must be taken when coordinating with another element or with command to avoid losing C2 link.
                  5) At the moment the radio used by the pilots is the same one used by the infantry (the one in the "Misc" section of the inventory). As such it is suggested that either the pilots have a long-range (backpack) radio with them or that they can utilise in-game VON/chat
                  6) Again, as mentioned above, the way this system works requires players to be in the same TS channel. As such it is not possible to separate them in sub-channels, since it would break the system.
                  7) This system does not simulate satellite-based communications and specialist equipment like FBCB2, FS3 (the boxy-thing on the Stryker RV. Note that it appears that it doesn't even work as a "simple" laser designator as it should be) and R/PDAs. This deficiency can be circumvented by employing ACE's Maps Trackers.

Re: New Radio SOP *Must Read*

In any case, the next update for the mod will be from Rommel (part of the ACE team). The team that has released the versions up to the current one said they'll stop and let him do the rest. So it may be part of ACE soon enough.

Note that there seems to be a problem with surround sound currently. If you have headphones it should funtion correctly, but if you have 7.1 speakers for example you may notice some weird behaviour - such as people in front of you sounding like they are to your left - it may be that the system is stereo only at the moment.

In any case this is a great leap forward (I hope I don't speak too soon) and is exactly what we needed. Hopefully a more polished version will come out eventually with ACE, but thanks to the original developers!

UPDATE It seems that the surround sound prob may have been fixed, there is a hotfix here: http://forums.bistudio.com/showthrea...=95918&page=12

UPDATE 2 Don't forget, if you go deaf, you will now also be deaf on teamspeak!

Rampart they normally wait until the 18.00 GMT ACE update before creating the modpack. Its normally doen a few hours after that.

I dont think thats right. I may be wrong though. When we tested the MAX range of the radio we used helo's and both helo crews had Long Range Radio options not just short range. No one in the crew need have a radio pack as the helo's are already "outfitted" with radios.

Thanks for the correction; I must have missed the fact that it was fixed: when I last read about it on the BI forums some of the testers complained that pilots could not communicate past 500m since the vehicle radio was not yet working. :)

Ah, yeah all vehicle radios work now. Every member of the crew can use the long range radio, thus eliminating the need for the pilot to do anything but fly. So now h3killa has no excuse for crashing :row__596:
