  • 5 ways to live longer and kill more baddies in the process

So with OA we've got a lot of new people (which is awesome) however this also means we have a lot of rookie mistakes being made (which is ok :) ). So here are 5 easy to remember things you can do to dramatically increase both your combat life expectancy and effectiveness.

    1. Don't Stand Up In A Firefight

Now this seems like a complete no-brainier but look around next time your in a firefight, its amazing how many people stand up regularly. The primary reason for people standing is usually to get a better view however keep in mind that as rifleman x you don't need to see that entire squad your engaging, as long as you can see your sector your golden. Under this category falls individual movement toward the enemy, in a firefight the only movements you should be making by yourself without coordination with others should be very small evasive movements usually in the prone if your attracting a particularly high amount of fire. These should be small, just enough to get some cover from that particular arc (i.e. < 2m).

    2. Keep Your Head on a Swivel

As in real life the best and most common way to detect threats is seeing them, most often in the form of movement. Unfortunately a game limits your peripheral vision so to adjust scan your flanks constantly, the best way to do this is either with a head tracking devise or by using freelook (left alt by default). and use it all the time! For example: if your moving in a column and your not on point you need to be scanning one of your flanks (and here is where FTLs come in to tell people what flank they should be watching). Keeping a good visual scan is the first step in developing good situational awareness.

    3. Keep Your Intervals and Formations
This is important, the 'default' interval should be about 10m, the average interval on sever is about 2. 10m is quite a distance (32.8 ft) that's about 5.5x the height of your average ARMA Solider. Not only will keeping your interval keep your entire squad from being wiped out by one mortar round, GPU or hand grenade it will also improve your squads fire effectiveness. As discussed in point 1 in the prone as you should be most of the time when engaging the enemy your field of fire is limited, however if your squad is spread out over 90-100m and everyone can see their own sector your squad is effectively covering the enemy your presented with. As an added bonus since everyone is shooting at only the enemy in their sector the squad is more effectively suppressing and engaging the enemy. Formations are also there for a good reason, it allows everyone to know exactly where the friendlies should be which reduces Friendly fire and it also can be used to help the leader achieve the desired effect of his maneuvers, so try to stay within 1-2m of where your should be (the ST HUD is a nice way to keep formation) but don't sacrifice staying in perfect formation for finding the enemy or keeping your interval.

    4. Do your part to gain and maintain fire superiority.
Infantry actions are usually resolved by fire superiority and maneuver; he who can put down a higher volume and more accurate fire can degrade the enemy ability to do the same and will be able to maneuver and destroy the enemy. As an infantrymen this means that as your squad engages a target you need to commit your firepower to the fight. What this means is instead of trying to line up that perfect head-shot aim for center of mass and fire 2-3 shots instead if your squad is in a firefight you should be shooting 1 round every 3 sec at an absolute minimum (ammo is much easier to replace than people). If you even think that there is an enemy at a position suppress it! Suppressive fire works even against the AI and using it will greatly reduce the enemy's ability to hurt you. Shoot at trees, doorways, windows, sides and tops of any cover you can see in your sector in order to keep the enemy's head down. And if you FTL or SL calls for suppressive or covering fire on a position make sure you really keep those key areas under fire, if you have friendlies crossing it only takes an enemy 1 sec to shoot a 3 round burst and kill someone.

    5. Communicate

By communicating you help build your squad-mates situational awareness and may even save someone elses virtual life or your own. The best way to do this for your regular riflemen is simply on direct VON, call out targets and keep a battle banter going with the people around you. 'watch that MG guy running left behind that tree' lets the person next to you know that a guy is running into his sector. As an AR give a loud 'reloading' so riflemen can shift and cover your sector for those few critical seconds the big gun is out of action. Often people get too caught up trying to give specific headings its much easier once you are already in a firefight to reference terrain features, buildings, trees, bushes or other notable objects. Communication allows for the flow of information which is the most critical resource in any battle.

In short the key theme underlying these 5 points is trust the thing that makes ARMA so compelling of a game is teamwork. And the reason the teamwork is so compelling and robust is that unlike almost every other game it is impossible be the game changer as an individual. Most new people are still in the mentality that they are the center of the engagement that they need to see and shoot every bad guy. Unfortunately in ARMA as in real life putting yourself in that position not only can you see every bad guy they can also see you and it tends to get people killed. Learning that you need to let your teammates cover that flank or watch that sector and learning to trust that they will do it allows people be able to do the things they need to do to be an effective infantryman.

This, this, this. If you're an automatic rifleman or pick up an M249/PKM it's responsibility to make it rain. You're supplying, depending on the size, about 70% of your team's firepower . As soon as you make contact, go prone and let it rip with 2-3 second bursts. It's your job to limit the maneuverability of the enemy while your riflemen move to engage.

Very true and most people understand that but even if you've got a rifle you still have to suppress... most people still try to use point fire even in pitched firefights and we often take casualties because of it.

I think the most important thing to note is: Just because you can't see the enemy doesn't mean he isn't there. An enemy could be behind a bush so you can't see him but its important to realize that you can still kill the enemy if you just shoot at their suspected positions.

I approve this reply: when acting as an AR, it is imperative to concentrate more on suppressing than carefully aimed shots, especially in the first few moment in a firefight; by suppressing the enemy, you force them to seek cover, allowing the team to maneuver to a better firing position, thus achieving complete fire superiority. Once that is achieved, the AR can fire in shorter bursts, aiming carefully and conserving ammo, but remember that weapons like the 249 are not designed to be a one-shot one-hit weapon.
Also, if you are an AR, you should expect to be the pointman in a MOUT environ, given that when faced with an unexpected enemy close to you, the rate of fire and ammo count will make the difference.

All in all, nice post Falcon: with the influx of new players, this post helps reminding everyone how to behave properly in a firefight.:icon14:

2a. Change your keybindings to your tastes.
There's a ton of keybinds, and knowing where the important actions are is... well, important to know. 'Alt' is a rather awkward key to press, especially in the middle of a firefight. If there's one key I suggest you change it's the alt key. Change all the spacebar-related command binds to alt, and all the freelook-related keybinds to spacebar. You'll probably want to use freelook much more than the command menu, and your thumb is usually right on spacebar if your use WSAD or EDSF for movement.

On a side note, I've change right right alt key to "get out" and double tapping right alt is "eject". This means I can quickly exit a vehicle if needed without having to fiddle with the action menu. (I just wish there was a way to get rid of the 'get out' and 'eject' options so I don't accidentally select them =p )

◄A gameplay note for those that don't know: The reason suppressive fire is important against AI is that any character who has a bullet land near them or whizz past gets a 'suppressed' effect. You may have noticed this yourself if you've been shot at or shot at the ground by accident. A shot that lands near an enemy and throws his aim off is better than spending more time to line up a shot when he already could have a bead on you. Against human players it also makes them want to seek cover and wait for the suppression effects to wear off, giving you more time that you're not getting shot at.

Another important effect suppression has on AIs is that it will make them less likely to fire: a completely supressed AI will try to stay prone, shoot poorly and shoot more rarely. Yet another reason to spray those enemies with an AR and gain fire superiority quickly.

Another tip, although this is more useful with ACE due to the increased number of different AT warhead, is that if you have an RPG, use it:
in ACE there are several specialised rounds, and if you are lugging around something like an HEDP (also present in regular ArmA2/OA), or an OG-7V, use them!, they were designed to kill large groups of infantry and are useless against heavy armor and marginally effective against light armor. Besides, they occupy valuable inventory space and are HEAVY :icon_lol:

If you're unsure what kind of round something is, click it in the inventory. It should say "HEAT" "HEDP" or something similar in the bottom left.

Also, wow, that video is weird. he keeps having it zoom and squish and stuff o_O
