  • PR to ArmA2 crossovers?

I'm a huge Battlefield 2 Project Reality fan. However, since recently moving and forgetting my BF2 disc I thought of it as a chance to try out ArmA2. I think PR is the best first person shooter war sim around and has a great knowledgable fanbase (especially around TG).

I was wondering if there are any converters from PR that would give me a thumbs up on whether I should purchase ArmA since I am huge on PR.

    Thanks

lol, I came from the same way as you... Loved PR, heard about ArmA from the TG community and then got it and loved it.. but I would hardly call PR a war sim, play arma and you will see what I mean.

I haven't played ArmA 2 yet but I would have to say it's a required buy if you have a good enough system. I bought arma 1 to see how it was and see what the community was like and two weeks after I bought it I didnt go back to PR for a couple months.. It's really that good. Its like military porn on your computer that you can play with.

      Longtime, no see buddy :-)

Do you think you'll pick up ARMA2? I put Vista on my rig just over a year ago...which meant I couldn't play ARMA1 at all anymore. After that I sort of fell outta gaming for a good 12-15 months because everything sucks with Vista. I figured I'd wait it out and eventually they'd fix it but they never did. About 2 weeks ago I thought I'd give PR a whirl again - that won't work with Vista and my Creative Drivers. Crashed constantly.

      Unbelievable.

I was literally about to order an OEM copy of XP to re-install but then I tried this demo and it's pretty sweet, dude. If I don't pick it up this weekend, I'll definitely grab it in the fall when the temperatures drop.

Haha damn, has been awhile.. I'm trying to get a new rig put together by the end of September, I'll for sure be playing ArmA 2 by October. I'm not sure how much I'll be getting on (school starting up again, I'm trying for atleast a 3.5 at comm college level, +work, +real life (I know, wtf?), +senior year, +football) but whenever you see me on ArmA 2 in the future it's gonna be some good gaming. Hyped up about getting this, for now I just play PR and the Medieval TW 2.

Vanity, welcome home! Any problems with Vista hit up our hardware section, we have lots of people playing both PR and ArmA on Vista and W7 so it can hopefully be solved.....

              Welcome home buddy.
See ArmA is that kind of game with mixed reviews where you really need to get your hands on it to see how awesome it is. Its sure is different than PR. Where as PR is focused in a TvT environnement, ArmA is more geared towards CooP.

I started here on TG by playing PR like many of us. And bought the first ArmA about a year and a half ago. Never looked back since. It has truly changed the way i see FPS games.

You should give it a swirl. Totally worth it.

-- I always wanted TG to be different than anyone else out there. We need to be unique in what we offer and how we play, if not we are simply competing with everyone else. --

                Re: PR to ArmA2 crossovers?

I just moved over from PR at the weekend. I would highly recomend arma2. Im on vista 32 (sick) but am upgradeing to a 64bit OS soon. A mate of mine said he can get me windows black which i only just looked into.It sounds a bit dodgy....

Anyway, back on topic: Get arma 2 its heaps of fun even when your getting your virtual but prodded. Like last night i was in Bravo squad and we ended up trying to assault uphill in the open. We came under horrendous fire and 6 of us tried to hide behind the same hay bail. Hilarity ensued :D

                Bravo FTW!

EDIT: Before that incident we also got lost for about 10 minutes because none of us had maps or gps :D I think Zedic put all us "spechuuul" people into one squad hehehe

                  Re: PR to ArmA2 crossovers?

Doro I think youll find many play both games, as there is advantages and disadvantages on both.

ArmA2 for small to medium scale (20-40 player) COOP (Human vs AI) missions.

PR for large scale (64 player) combined arms TVT (Human vs Human).

ArmA2 is still buggy but will slowly be patched (eventually) to get most features working. Currently dont have working in game VOIP, it crashes many players and most servers have it disabled. The Join In Progress (JIP) is buggy and causes huge server desyncs, causing most missions to be made without respawn/JIP. Getting more than 40 players on the server usually ends up badly, the server/game lags out and all kinds of odd/strange things happens. TVT in ArmA2 is not really how the game was designed there is not proper systems in place to have enjoyable TVT without it either being too spammy or just not fun. But the modding community for ArmA2 is great and may eventually come up with a good solution to TVT, although TG has a TVT server that I've not tried much yet so may yet have some luck if shooting at bots aint your thing..

Only other thing to mention on the 2 is player amounts... generally ArmA2 has much lower player populations than PR, and like said above most typical servers are below 40 players or they get unstable. So if your playing hours are at non peak hours, where PR would still have 2-3 full 64 player servers, ArmA2 will likely only have 1 server over 40 and most servers less than 20. As it never really got a big commercial release in North America (just steam release) I think its affected players online, plus whereas BF2/PR was designed as a multiplayer only game, ArmA2 was primarily designed with singleplayer in mind and multiplayer was definitely 2nd in pecking order.

                    Re: PR to ArmA2 crossovers?

Just thinking on what Fuzzhead said; does anyone know why ArmA2 wasn't really advertised at all or anything? I mean if they did advertise they'd get a lot more angry players at the lack of it being finished but then they would also get more money and motivation to actually polish up the product.

Also for ArmA1 the game was really the engine and the community was really the game if you can follow that. By that I mean that ArmA 1 was released unfinished and only because of the community that still surrounded this unfinished product was ArmA 2 ever even possible. ArmA probably has one of the greatest gaming communities where it comes to maturity combined with fun gameplay and smart thinking. ArmA also has a mission editor, PR is just maps with flags or the whole insurgent/taliban thing where pretty much every game is the same... very fun, but all the same. ArmA is the same map (usually until more maps get added to a certain server) but its one gigantic map where the mission editor can do whatever he likes (1 Platoon lead, 5 sqls, 20 inf, 2 tanks and blah blah blah attacking these sets of objectives going up against however much the pre game briefing will tell you) this means that there is an infinity amount of possible missions to be played out and TG has a pretty impressive team of mission creators, probably one of the best within the whole ArmA community (by team I mean a bunch of people who say their work was made in mind of TG).

                      Re: PR to ArmA2 crossovers?

Before you get too caught up on player numbers I'll add that some of the best gaming of my life has been on Arma missions with fewer than 10 players. I'm not saying a larger scale mission isn't fun but compare that to PR where, in my opinion, small scale numbers spell doom for gameplay issues.
