  • ArmA2 Beta Builds - "Nightly"/"Weekly" builds now available

For those who are interested in testing non-final beta builds from BIS, they've now put together a process by which you can do so.

You can find the latest "nightly" build here:
    http://www.arma2.com/beta-patch.php

To install, you simply take the patch zip and extract it into your ArmA2 folder in a 'beta' subdirectory. From there, make a new shortcut to ArmA2 that has the following in the target line (assuming you use Steam):
    "C:\Steam\steamapps\common\arma 2\beta\ArmA2.exe" -nosplash -showScriptErrors -mod=beta

In the "start in" line, you want it to look like this:
    "C:\Steam\steamapps\common\arma 2\"

Note that "start in" is in the ArmA2 folder, while "target" is in the arma2\beta folder. This is an important distinction to make! It's identical to the ArmA1 beta patches in this regard - fail to do that and you will not be using the full patch.

Here are the most recent changes as of this build:
[58805] Fixed: Switching to Utes from Chernarus caused Utes to contain infinite landscape.
[58797] Fixed: Time of day synchronized on client after connection to server.
[58788] Command line argument -cpuCount=NNN to override cpu count detection.
[58758] Removed mouse smoothing to reduce mouse lag in some situations.
[58729] Fixed: Simulate speed of sound
[58727] Fixed: fire from rifle distort sound
[58704] Fixed: Crash by malformed input to a diag_log scripting function.
[58701] Fixed: Muzzle flash was seen dark in some weapon optics.
    [58698] Improved: Audio volume settings
[58665] Fixed: MP: Ships and boats used excessive bandwidth and CPU power.
[58654] Fixed: Players are no longer forced to reconnect after MP Load on server.
[58643] Fixed: bike rider can be no longer healed
Definitely recommend checking it out - it should work fine on any 1.03 server, and the change to the mouse smoothing (removal of filtering) is very nice.

BIS will be updating these beta builds on a regular basis from here on out, so if you like the idea of contributing towards testing of ArmA2 in a more active manner, or simply seeing what they're working on for the next 'full' patch release, give it a shot. You won't harm your current ArmA2 install and can switch between the 'beta' patch and your current 1.03 patch with ease.

Re: ArmA2 Beta Builds - "Nightly"/"Weekly" builds now available

      Additional info:
From now on, the latest beta patches for Arma 2 are available to everyone from http://www.arma2.com/beta-patch.php including detailed change logs.

Arma 2 Beta is a public preview release intended for developer testing and community feedback. It may be updated often and we use it to verify that a bug we are tracking has been fixed. This semi-automated release pipeline was designed primarily for our various external QA teams but we believe it makes sense to keep this open and transparent to the entire user community. However, please understand that it's released for advanced users only and for those who would like to give their helping hand with the testing and further development or simply to see what future versions of Arma 2 may bring.

If you're not interested in testing beta patches (which of course is completely understandable), please just ignore this message and act as if you never read it as there's simply no reason for you to bother about the beta builds at all. There is no need to start complaining about the open beta release policy as we believe it's doing no harm to anyone and can only speed up the entire development process. The complexity of Arma 2 has reached a nearly critical level, especially with all of the user addons and modifications, that testing of the game also requires a more agile approach and this is our attempt to address it.

We have evaluated the Arma 1 public beta versions system used in the past and tried to improve it, not only to allow much faster cycle but also to avoid unwanted userbase split in multiplayer (we will try to maintain compatibility between various versions in multplayer to achieve this).

We make the beta builds for testing only, but it will also allow community developers to test their own content in new versions of the game before it's released officially in stable and tested patch form. For the public beta patch, we write code and post the results frequently, so anyone can join our testing process and report bugs. However, Arma 2 Beta might introduce some new problems from time to time and may not even start properly, so please do not download Arma 2 beta builds if you're unwilling to put up with problems to help with the testing of the game and stick with the latest official release instead.

We tried to create the whole beta program in as user friendly a manner as possible, but feel free to post your suggestions here.

      SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
      -----------------------------------------
      - ANY ORIGINAL VERSION OF ARMA 2 from 1.03 (including Steam version)
      - DirectX 9 March 2009 is required

HOW TO INSTALL AND RUN THE BETA PATCH
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run the patch exe to apply the patch setup automatically (you may be prompted to choose your exact version in some occasions).

      * It will install all beta content to a mod folder "Beta", including the beta exe (that has to be run properly with working directory set to the main game installation, see below for more information)

      * To launch Arma2 beta patch you need to go to the main game directory and click on shortcut "Launch Arma2 Beta Patch"

      * You can configure your Arma 2 with Beta Patch including other mods etc., just make make sure that:
      in your ArmA Shortcut start-up Target line;
      - You are running the Arma2.exe from your "beta" folder.
      - You have "beta" in your modfolder as in -mod=beta
      example: "C:\Program Files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA 2\beta\arma2.exe" -mod=beta
      - Make sure the shortcut's "Start In" section refers to main "Arma 2 " main working folder and NOT "Arma 2/beta"
      example: "C:\Program Files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA 2"

You can always run your Arma 2 final version in the main Arma 2 folder if you use default application shortcuts, start menu or run the regular arma2.exe without the beta mod folder.

        Wow great idea!

Big props to BIS for opening up their work like this! This sets then apart from other teams I really like idea of open/transparent dev cycles as it gives lots of room for feedback and truly shows how much work/time deva put into each build

Now here's hoping a VON fix is underway hehe ;)

I'm having a sound issue with Creative USB headphones. Sometimes when I'm engaged in game, firing my weapon in other words, I hear a low pitched buzzing. When I stop firing it goes away...Is this the sound issue you refer to?

I don't think I had this before 1.03 but I chalked it up to some kind of software issue. Kind of wish I didn't go USB just for the lower price.

            Thanks.

So these beta builds work 100% with the TG server? Will using these builds cause any stress or errors on the main box?

They shouldn't. BIS is trying to keep them MP compatible.

It is a beta, though, so there are no guarantees.

Re: ArmA2 Beta Builds - "Nightly"/"Weekly" builds now available

Thanks, Dys. A couple of notes/corrections (at least, this is how it worked for me, as a Steam user):

                            1) You have to RUN the beta executable after you unzip it. The beta executable creates the "beta" subdirectory in your arma folder. I didn't have to create it myself.

                            2) If you're a Steam user like me, you never manually downloaded the 1.03 patch, so the whole "OMG time to install 1.03, this cannot be undone!!!1!!" message is a little unnerving. Don't worry, ignore it. When the beta patch runs, it will scare you with this message, then after you click "OK" it will immediately figure out that you've already updated to 1.03 and skip the process anyway. Finished in less than 3 seconds.

                            3) If you don't already start ArmA2 from a desktop shortcut (like me, I always open the Steam panel and open it from the My Games list), you can right-click ArmA in your My Games list and "Create desktop shortcut." If you already run from a desktop shortcut, copy it somehow to create a new one (you will want to preserve your old one). Once you have a new shortcut to make your beta-launch shortcut, you can then right-click the new short-cut and click -> properties to modify the "target" and "start-in" properties as Dys mentioned above (with a slight difference, see next).

                            4) My Steam is located under Program Files, so my "target" and "start-in" needed to be slightly different than what Dys posted. It's almost identical except prepended with "Program Files" like this:

                            target:
                            "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\comm...

                            and

                            start-in:
                            "C:\Program Files\Steam\ste...

So far, I can confirm that installing the beta patch seems to have zero risk. I can launch with the "vanilla" ArmA2 any time I want with the old shortcut. When I launch with the beta, I *AM* able to connect to any multiplayer server running 1.03 with no problems.

And yes, the latest build seems to have fixed smoke grenades. w00t. Thx again Dyslexic.

Thanks for taking the time to post those clarifications. They changed it from a zip into an installer right before making it public, so my instructions were based off of the old (and now outdated) method. Thanks again.
