  • Command channel SOP; mission design considerations & pilots

One of the problems that I have noticed is trying to determine who has access to the yellow command channel. I believe only the squad leaders of each group are able to hear what is being said on that channel. This creates a problem especially for air assets as subordinated pilots cannot use the command channel which naturally causes communication difficulties. If there is a way for mission makers to setup their pilot roles so each air asset has at least one person who is able to be in contact with the commander. (IE do not lump all the pilots in the same group) That would eliminate the need to use TS to coordinate Air assets. The side channel is not a proper solution as the grunts on the ground do not need to be able to hear their commander.

That being said, one of the concerns that I have regarding the command channel is its use in maps that do not have respawn and the succession of command. Basically map makers and people joining in slots need to be aware that the proper rank structure should be in place. IE if you are taking a position of a FTL leader or you have a rank higher than private in a squad/section, there is a chance that you will 'automatically' become the CO of the squad if the Squad leaders and FTL leaders die. For some that do not want to take leadership roles, but find themselves as a leader due to the line of succession, it is difficult for the CO to assign command to another person due to the other person not being able to hear the CO on the command channel. This would require the CO and the squad in question to coordinate via TS; however, it implies that all squads would also have to use TS to coordinate with command so each squad lead can talk to the other.

As a general rule, for all pilots I would strongly recommend you bind a button on your joysticks to your VON push to talk button, and also bind a button to change channel frequencies. Each arma 2 action is able to accept multiple bindings. This way you are still able to speak with your team and command without letting go of your joystick.

Personally I find it MUCH easier to bind the different Von channels to diff keys rather than having a transmit button and having to switch channels, makes it alot more likely you'll transmit on wrong channel and switch channels mid sentence which garbles the transmission.

Also the mission makers should be setting up their squads with succesipn in mind especially in no respawn. IMO having a 2ic in every squad should be mandatory for all missions...

Skin, separating pilots into different groups would only heighten problems as individual flyboys have difficulty communicating with each other. The best solution is for each mission to include an air-asset controller that does ground-side communication and mission support. Let him have the group leader position, and let the flyboys worry about flying.

Or add the FAC (not JTACs) into the Airasset group as leader. Ergo, Command net direct to a from mission commander without disrupting the other freq/channels.
