  • [AAR] Black Ops Sunday Event

Our mission was to infiltrate at dawn, eliminate an enemy HVT on his morning walk at long range, then exfiltrate. Detailed intel was provided and as a result the squad was split into two independent fire teams. The first team (Me, Woody, Potatonator, Jersey* and Jammy*) was to advance to the corner due south of the target location, and there the second team (Rudolf, Mosati, GuitarPro and Tiberia) would set up a blocking position against the most likely line of enemy reinforcements. The first team would then move West to the objective, hold it until the HVT appeared, at which point team 2 would regroup on the objective. After the HVT was eliminated the two teams were to retreat South West and then move to the coast on the western side of the airfield. It was going to be a long walk but given the likely enemy positions and lines of approach it was the only safe one. "Do it right," command said "and you'll only have to fire one shot".

As it happened as soon as we left our infil point we came under fire and took one more contact as we made our way in tree cover to the first waypoint. There team 1 split off and moved up the hill whilst team 2 set up their blocking position. Intel had suggested there was zero enemy presence in the area, however 200m out from the first objective we ran head on into an enemy patrol. Whilst our initial plans were to quickly disengage from contact, we sustained a few quick casualties, and were unable to retain our mobility whilst treating them. In the meantime the enemy were able to surround us and we were all quickly incapacitated. Team 2 quickly came to our rescue, then pushed on to the objective whilst we regrouped and tended our wounds.

There we found we had good eyes on the target but were about 650m out - a little way out of effective range. Carefully we moved forward through about 100-150m of open ground, making sure we didn't expose ourselves to the enemy patrols on our left flank or the numerous squads and APCs surrounding the target. We spotted the HVT (there was some confusion as he had yet to put his uniform on for the day) and our marksman took him down with a quick flurry of shots. Immediately we ran back South West, taking sporadic fire but only one soldier being injured. From there we began our long march to the exfil point, winding our way through valley and ridges and avoiding all contacts except for one compound which we had to clear. Casualties were light and we retained the element of surprise until (with one prudent course correction suggested by Rudolf) we were overlooking the exfil point.

To our horror it was crawling with troops, several squads at least with outlying foot patrols. Recalling our main objective was already complete, we radioed our extract boats and shifted the exfil point to a safe position about 700m North. We avoided an enemy foot patrol and legged it to the boats, where we were met by a press photographer who wanted to interview us and take our photograph for Stars and Stripes.

Overall I had a fun mission despite leading my fire team into an ambush on the way to the first objective. We managed to avoid the enemy for the most part and complete our objectives with a minimum of fuss. Thanks to everybody who played and sorry to those who joined a bit late and found themselves a couple of km walk from the action :)
