  • Very impressed so far

Despite the bugs - most notably the problems with issuing and displaying orders on the map or as HUD - I am very impressed with this game. The scale of it alone is intimidating at first, but quickly begins to feel 'real' in terms of the physical environment. Getting somewhere, and coordinating movement, is a real part of this game.

I played my first escort/convoy multiplayer mission last night and was impressed at how much it actually felt like a road trip. I was also surprised to find so many civilians hanging around, like at at gas stations (which we were able to refuel at). I almost expected them to start chucking rocks when we stole their pickup trucks. In the pickups, I was again impressed to find that the guages actually looked like they were photo-sampled out of the Toyota dashboard. And, as in all vehicles, the guages actually do work. When one of them was blown up, the end of the convoy could clearly see the smoke from 3/4 of a mile away.

I'm very much looking forward to watching this game develop - seeing enhancements, bug fixes, and most of all TG-style play. See you on the server!

Yes, I was hesitant after reading the negative reviews on some of the ArmA forums.

Yes, the game is buggy, but I have yet to encounter a bug that "broke the experience". It seems 80% of the negativity is coming from people that just don't have the hardware to play the game. My game runs awesome and looks beautiful and has never once crashed to desktop. This game is mind boggingly awesome in sheer detail and "what you can do".

This game will last me eons of fun (when I actually buy it, still debating waiting vs springing for a foreign copy).

I'm enjoying it also on my "junky" system. I just turned everything down low (or off) and though its no eye candy (just avg) the options and gameplay (despite the bugs) makes for a great tactical game. I just stick to servers where my ping is best (not many but TG is one and that's all that matters) and have had no real problems.

Nothing like watching 12 human controlled soldiers tactically move into a town and clear it out or repel a counter attacking team.

The potential is limitless - even with a small following here at TG this game is gonna be around a long time.

I totally agree - this is all about potential. And one has to remember that the following at TG is only small right now because only a few of us can afford the luxury of buying a foreign version before the Feb. 17 (or whatever) release in 2007.

If you are burned out on BF2 and can afford the ~$50, though, get the advance download. This is clearly the next step in battlefield simulation.

+ rep to all of you guys singing the praises...I'm in complete agreement.

I can't wait to see a server filled with people playing this title.

I've played mp a bunch of times but only joined up twice or three times with actual human players...Let's set a time and day to get together for mp games...what do you think? Human players make the MP come alive so much. I'll start another thread -- please look for it and chime in.

I love this game so much. It has huge potential. I haven't been on lately because I am addicted to making missions and hopefully getting some missions finished and on the server for everyone to play.

I hope it gets a following here - but unlike some titles like RO and COD2 I think all the different style options and mission diversity make it a long term game even if it turns into a small player base at TG.

This game isn't gonna be for everyone, especially with the hardware issues and the lack of instant BF2 gratification. It's not better or worse than BF2 - just different.

                Team Demo.

I agree with what I am reading also.

It is overwelming at first, but man, it really starts to grow on you.

We had five humans on my server last night.

                B-Hack
                Shakey
                Floody
                Troublesome
                Rick

On the eight player co-op, we played.
We went inside the down and went urban warfare and punished the AI.
The team needed about 50 kills to get the job done.
With some help from two birdies in the final minutes, we did.

We later went to the Capture the Iland to experiment. Players seemed to enjoy things. Troublesome joined the opposite team and promptly had a militia take over the town of Ortigia. We flew over, Trouble did his best to keep his AI to check their fire, but the chopper went down (stiring went away) and we jumped out. Floody was the first to check for parachutes. ( no button here, just happens as soon as you jump out).
Later, Floody and I went on tank detail and it was fun to make like Marvels Juggernat and drive through forest and towns and leveling trees, wooden fennces, metal fences and even concrete slabs, leveling water towers (primary gun), small buildings (primary gun). Think of the options for sieging a town on a scrim! ("o.k. for the first 20 mins we are going to shell the piss out of the town, and then move in, any questions?"
I l0ve the terrian variations on the iland. Some plaines, some mountains, some forests, very impressively made towns; very very sick awsome stuff.

After this we played Capture the flag against the enemy AI and jepzilla came in. Real cool map to do this.

Yeah, the U.S.A. release should be tight, and after six months to a year, the game should be really dialed in with patches and stuff.

                    Re: Very impressed so far

I'm still impressed, but I have to ammend this thread with something that is driving me nuts on multiplayer - the command and control system is very lacking. Sure, the elements are there - the squad leader can select up to 10 squadmates to (though it's very difficult to determine who is who) give orders using a numerical command tree. There are lots of command options, from move/mount to formation, which is great. But that's about it - there's lots lacking here:

                    - Squad leader (SL) should be able to quickly determine the location of everyone in his squad on the map, and possibly in HUD as well.
                    - When SL gives an order, that order should at least show up on the map for all to see, possibly on squadmates HUDs. I actually liked the BF2 colored smoke system, but just a simple tag on the map 'MOVE' would be fine.

Lastly, as far as I can tell the only friendly soldiers that show up on your map are your squadmates. We need to see all friendly targets on the map. You simply can't get tactical without this critical information. When I pull up my map, I want to know where my orders are, where my squadmates are, and where my other team members are.

I think part of that was left out for the sake of realism. But yea, alot of it is just an oversight.

My frame rates are still abysmal (17FPS max) to the point that shooting someone moving is impossible. I have been enjoying flying the blackhawk in the CTI mode. It is pretty fun to shuttle people around to various points. Now if only I was a decent pilot...

                          Roger that.

BTW, the best teamspeak button is "spacebar" with this game. Communication is very important. This easy access button should be teamspeak, IMO.

Have you tried disabling V-sync on your GFX card control? Apparently ArmA forces it on. That got me an extra 5-10fps. Check out the tweak guide thread : http://www.tacticalgamer.com/armed-a...-progress.html

yep been there done that Amosely. I followed the teak guide, updated my drivers and updated direct x. It looks like it just flat out won't work with my SLi system. I even set up an Sli profile for the game and that allowed the FPS in the static screen when the game first loads to go to 60fps but it is still unplayable on the ground. I have turned everything down and it only made a 1-2 FPS difference. It is very frustration especially when I get such great rates on 2142 with everything set on medium.
