  • THANK YOU Tactical Gamer ArmA People

Through what appears to be the correct mixture of (but often elusive balance of) required realism/disciplined play and yet mostly "noob" friendly experienced players (Flenaly, Switch, Angel of Death, snake doc and a few canadian and Boston accented individual like Jonh S come to mind), it would appear that TACTICAL GAMER has landed on the magic mixture required to accomplish a few things.

    #1.
Help a new guy coming into a complex game (Me) and keep him engaged without feeling like a "noob".

    #2.
Provide him with an atmosphere that allows the new player (Me) to have exciting experiences early on through mutual support by more experienced players (a must if you want to see your style of play adopted and grow)

    #3.
Help develop those who believe in "See one - Do one - Teach one"

After only 2 weeks in the game, I have become a fairly safe heli pilot and I am getting opportunities to be a squad lead. I'm not great or anything, But I'm getting "in the groove" and its pretty fun stuff.

Kudos to you all at TACTICAL GAMER. I am truly impressed. and I am VERY THANKFUL for the way almost everyone on the servers helped me get up to speed on an enormous number of nuances and details of the game within a short period of time.

So I just wanted to say thank you to whoever has put together this community and its attitudes and its rules and its servers etc. You have achieved something that few ever do (though many servers try).

I guess I will try to join a squad within TG now. and if this impression of mine holds for a week or 2 more, I no doubt will make an annual donation. If this continues to be what it appears to be, it is worth it.

    THANKS AGAIN.

Although I was first introduced w/ TG from within BF2, I lost interest, and as such, I've been away for quite sometime! I now have found another opportunity to participate w/ TG, thanks to ArmA! So, allow me to be the first to say welcome, and happy hunting!

    S!

Nice introduction Sleep. We squadded up on ArmA last night.

Apophis is the founder of TG...well it wasn't originally TG but "Level 42" (I think). His vision for a mature place for gamers on the net has really taken hold and we are all the beneficiaries to that legacy.

Apo is a regular forum contributor and it's not uncommon to see him in game. Don't know if he'll be playing ArmA but I imagine so.

You'll definitely see me in game! ArmA is my game of choice right now, unfortunately I've just not had much time to game the past few weeks.

Re: THANK YOU Tactical Gamer ArmA People

                    Well Angel,

The truth is somewhere in the middle. I am very new to ArmA as I indicated and I never played OFP when it was out. So my ability to learn some of the software nuances of the game is a real tribute to people like yourself and others at TG who took the time and the welcoming attitude to answer my "on the fly questions" about this and that. Rather than getting annoyed with my games of "50 questions" everytime i logged in, most everyone found time and pateince for me.

As far as leading squads, that is nothing new to me. I am by no means "a natural talent" like some squad leads i meet (I got the sense that the player named Switch might be one of those natural talents), but I do know how to exert organization and sector control to keep a squad engaged in their purpose and tasked safely.

I am a long time fan of most of the big coop tac sims through the years as are many of the players in ArmA (I imagine). I am also big on study level flight sims like Falcon 4 etc. that allow for larger scale coop online play. And I have always enjoyed being a squad lead and I am fortunte enough to get quite a bit of practice. My friends tolerate me.

                    : )

My most recent coop squad lead expereince came in GRAW1 PC. No matter what some might say about that tac sim, that Coop game required tight comms and strong squad lead and squad member discipline at the harder levels. I really tightened up my skills running that coop campaign at the harder levels. And although ArmA and GRAW1 PC are worlds apart, squad discipline is squad discipline. It translates pretty well to any squad formation.

I'm Looking forward to learning more from you guys at TG and hoping to earn the right to lead squads from time to time.

Re: THANK YOU Tactical Gamer ArmA People

I had my first online experience with ARMA last night and Sleepdoc was the SL. I would never have guessed he was a "noob" to the sim considering his clear, concise, professional instructions in the direction of the squad last night. He carried on like he actually does this sort of thing in real life. :)

There was not one time I (as the real noob) didn't know my job, the goal of the squad and who was around me in support throughout this very tense mission. The comms last night by everyone were fantastic.

I really enjoyed myself. I had heard TG was the place to be if one wanted mature, thinking people playing a sim to its potential. I gotta say what the hell took me so long? :)

Thanks for the experience guys. Thanks to TG for being here and providing a place to meet all these upstanding people.

                          Cheers.

                            @Enigma,

It was an honor and pleasure leading you last night. Thanks for joining our squad and allowing me the opportunity.

Although i am VERY NOOB to ArmA (about 3 weeks or so now ... with NO OFP from the past), I have been functioning as a squad leader in coop tac sims for years.

                            RAVEN SHIELD
                            HIDDEN AND DANGEROUS 2:SABRE SQUADRON
                            SWAT 4
                            GRAW 1 PC
                            OTHERS AS WELL

BUT the reality is that ArmA creates unique and new challenges and new opprtunities for squad leaders becuase it is just so massively open ended. It used to be (in games like the ones i just listed) that squad leaders had their squad, their squad comms on TS, their environment and their enemy to deal with. AND THAT WAS IT. And although the technique for non-ambiguous SL comms and tactical movements remain essnetailly the same, the additional dimensions of acting as SL in ArmA and on the TG server can lead to massive amounts of TASK SATURATION.

One way to manage task saturation is practice. Build up that muscle, so to speak. But the other way is to develop organizational structures that limit the potentially overwhelming inputs to the squad leader. stay tuned (not int his post) for some new ideas and implementations for structure desinged to control TS based task saturation. We are working on something.....

I never realized how one-dimensional the SL position was in those other tac sims until I played this one. Now we have to deal with a constant flow of new players wanting to integrate into your operation underway, the coordination with other squads already in the area, the dedicated heli support from the unselfish men who arrive to perform this vital task, the armor groups that form at base and drive to the zone to privide assistance (Thank you E-Mail ... i loved your perspctive on vehicle support experimentation last night ... a man after my own heart ..) etc etc etc.

These are the challenges of the SL in ArmA. And if you think I wasn't absolutely exhausted after last nights brutal advance into Ortego, think again.

LOL. I was trashed when we were done. So I'm still building that muscle. This in not your father's one dimensional tac sim. : )

So all of us, SL sand SMs have some work to do to take this amazing expereince, and draw it deeper into a more immersive, more manageable experience.

I believe you have found the best server on the net. I believe I haev found the best ArmA server on the net.

I look forward to seeing you and leading you online. And who knows. I'll bet you'll be leading me soon enough.
