  • Operation Wildfire

Operation Wildfire is a 65 slot (+2 civilian press slots) TacticalGamer joint-operations mission which sees the US Army and US Marine Corps invade the nation of Molatia in an attempt to restore order in the region.

    -----------------------------------

NOTE: You will probably have to load this twice on the server before it will start properly. This has to do with a "pristresek.p3d" error which I believe is a Duala problem and happens in other missions, at least the ones which use certain parts of the island where that object is present. I guess we'll find out soon enough if that's really the problem when the latest Duala update is put on the servers.

I'm putting this up now as it's probably more trouble than it's worth to obsessively track down every last possible bug in this on my own. Tested both on my own and with the help of Krause, Tek, HeadShot and Ozymandias a few days ago, I know it is possible to complete the mission since the objective completion scripting works, and all the third party scripts included are working. So I'll just upload this and have real players start throwing spanners in the works.

If this seems very similar to Afrene's Awakening, that's probably because it is. Afrene's Awakening was my attempt at seeing if I could actually make a mission that worked, and this is kind of Afrene's Awakening redux. This includes a great deal more custom scripting than AA, but all of it has been tested and should work properly. If it doesn't, well, there's always hotfixes and new versions.

This might make for a good unofficial event mission, but I'm not really comfortable with that until a test run can be done with a smaller group, between 25-30 people should be enough to slowly work through it. I was able to get decent performance (server FPS-wise) on my PC once it finishes caching and setting up everything, so the quad Xeons over at the official servers should handle it OK. Just don't forget to turn off BLUFOR AI, or you'll be adding an extra 60 units with their own pathfinding, which may be almost as many as the enemy units left pathing around the map at start after they've been fully reduced.

If you want to plan a scheduled playthrough of this mission, or get a better idea of what it is, you can check out the briefing outside of the mission HERE (also includes briefing map). I will also post any changelogs there since you lose the ability to edit your posts here after a while. You can also download the .pbo for v1.0 directly from here if you don't want to wait for the download from the server; it's roughly 720KB.

Credits are included in the briefing, but I'd like to thank everyone in the mission editing channel and board, in particular Fincuan, beta, Krause, H.Rearden and Inkompetent, for their help.

Sounds nice and it has Press slots!

Epic, I also added some into my ArmA1 missions, sadly we are missing a proper reporter model now.

Oh man. we'll have to check if that falls into my contract agreement with Faux news first.

Version 1.0 is now on Alpha and Bravo. First update will probably add the HKs which we got with yesterday's ACE update to the ammoboxes. If you play this while I'm not around, make sure to let me know how it went ;).

edit: Version 1.0 wasn't quite baked. 1.1 will be going up shortly and should fix all the bugs that stuck around. Don't play it until 1.1 is on the server.

Version 1.1 is now up, note it was renamed to "CO71_OpWildfire_v11" due to administration issues. The ammobox bug is fixed, commanders have been added to armor squads and the enemies in Nubak have been tweaked.

This mission sounds like a good one for a Sunday event.
I'm willing to help test it.

                  Re: Operation Wildfire

Yeah, I'm hoping it'll be a good event mission. I want to do a test run for "human factors" though, as twice now I've seen Afrene's Awakening effectively completed only to get called because people couldn't kill the last few enemies left in Bolabongo. Since there are quite a few of these objectives in Wildfire, if people have similar trouble I'll have to rewrite the trigger replacement scripts to, say, consider a town "clear" when BLUFOR outnumbers OPFOR. A 29 player mission is different from a 71 player one, though, so I want to see how it works out first.
