  • Zed spawn rates and challenges

One of the things that Sarge and I noted last night when escorting a group of survivors north from the coast was that the zeds respawn rate is much, much higher.

We were approaching Drozhino on a nearly empty server. Zed count was at 300. As we drew nearer to the town the zed count spiked to 380. Literally what were empty fields and houses turned to a swarm. We stood off from the town and took out the zeds at range, moving closer and taking out the ones that ran at us. The problem was that as we moved through the town they were practically spawning right on top of us and steadily. We had no respite. Has this been the experience of others since the last patch?

Looking for good discussion on the best strategy to handle this new development.

Re: Zed spawn rates and challenges

I've noticed that ridiculous respawning rate before this patch. I couldn't even get through a small village, before zeds respawned only about a minute after I had killed them. The amount of zombies in this patch is apparently a side effect of fixing some related bugs and wasn't a planned feature. So I expect these numbers to go back down in the future. Best way to deal with a bunch of zombies is always going around them. If that's not an option, go for 1866 shotguns and sidearms. They tend to be the most quiet ones and I've seen zombies not reacting to shooting from as close as ~ 50m. Two bullets from a makarov into the upper chest area takes down a zombie most of the time. If you get rushed by a swarm though, best tactic is to get indoors or find some stairs, piers, et cetera - they slow them down considerably.

Smoke grenades. Seriously they work really well... almost to the point where a smoke grenade is a weapon when thrown at a person simply because the swarm that will follow it.

I've had no success with tin cans... glass bottles don't seem too good either.

Beyond that, their is a 'anti spawn' bubble around you so an area will remain clear generally speaking if you don't do anything too loud.

Watch the beginning of the video in this thread. http://www.tacticalgamer.com/arma-da...e-defense.html , the only reason this failed is cause someone panicked and started firing. I got a group in and out of Vybor managing to raid the store without casualties the other day.

In the interests of full disclosure, the panic fire was due to the fact the zombie alerted on the sound of the smoke grenade.
I'm pretty sure he would have run to the smoke a moment later but with lag I can't be sure the Z wasn't closer than pictured in the vid.
Smoke grenades seem to be plentiful in the northern areas.

B and I was on a server today with 2700 plus Z's. Anyone experience this before?

I've seen 8000 I believe at some point....

It all really depends with how close survivors are to their spawns....

Really if their isn't a large count... then the survivors know what they are doing and you need to be double careful.

Re: Zed spawn rates and challenges

There are so many zeds now that the ammo spent in killing them isn't offset by the loot found thereafter.

After I parted ways with Damonte, Sarge, and Drax last night, I spent a couple of quality hours in Lopatino, and the lesson really sunk in. I went into Lopatino stealthily, looted some good gear, slipped, got discovered, and started shooting. Even with a couple of boxes of ammo I found, and my focus on headshots, I still ended up running out of ammo and dying.

On next respawn, I went through four villages, looting a compass and a map and some good supplies without firing a shot. I would find a village, circle it wide until I found a gap in the undisturbed zeds, crouch-run until the edge of their detect radius, crouch-walk until the buildings, then just crawl inside the buildings, loot and run. If I got discovered when I was crouched, I'd just prone and walk away. If I got discovered completely, I would just book it outside the village, into the trees, until I was well clear. The sound of gunfire in town attracts all the zeds, whereas my running out of it only pulls the ones in immediate vicinity. This took about 10-15 minutes solid per village, but I'm much better equipped now, and I'm unhurt.

If the zed count near human-made things was about 50% of what it is now, I'd feel confident shooting and then looting. For now, it's stealth + looting + running. I simply can't offset the spent ammo with the loot I find. Looking back at it now, if we had the leasure, I'd have taken the same approach to Vybor. Find a gap, sneak in, loot, and bail town without disturbing anything. Even if we'd gotten discovered, we could have fought indoors, and that gives us an advantage.

Re: Zed spawn rates and challenges

Got on last night for a couple of hours. First spawn was in the middle of nowhere. Walked miles and the first village had a huge Z count, stealthed it and got into the centre then some Dirty Harry type starts firing and it turns into a zombie village fete. At this critical juncture I notice I have a revolver....and Makarov mags, not really helpful as a spawn kit. As Elvis said "He tried to run but he didn't get far".

Respawn in the middle of a pack of Z's on some sort of outing. Manage to creep away. Reach a built up area and once again someone else decides to go all Chuck Norris and invite every Z in a 4 mile radius to the party. I dive into a building and stumble on a few flares and no ammo, Chuck Norris follows me and murders me for my spawn gear which sucked and seemed somewhat pointless and counter productive in view of the fact that the gunshots would only attract more z's. Sadly some of the people playing this don't seem very bright, at all.

Will jump on again tonight and work on linking up with some more teamwork orientated TG'rs. Definitely need to wirk together and play it smart with the increased Z count. Stealthy infils all the way, shoot as a last resort seems to be the ticket.

Oh definitely being ninja is worth the effort. Unless, you have a silenced weapon. Not just a pseudo weapon loaded with SD rounds.
But that will attract other players, so yes. If you have the chance, carry one. I was lucky enough to come across sets of tents and looted it like there was no tomorrow. But only ended up taking the MP5SD6 with 4x MP5SD mags. Leaving ton 'o stuff, food, ammo, bloodpack, epi-pens, etc.

But hey! I can shoot Zed's with no repercussions. Woot!
