  • Tips for players new to DayZ and the ArmA2 engine / interface

So I'm realizing taking my first stab at DayZ isn't wise when it's dark out. I can't see a thing. :-)

Anyway... it's been a very long time since I had fired up Arma2 and even then my gaming time was short-lived. So... for those of you familiar with Arma, do you have any tips for getting used to the interface / hud / commands? I normally update all of my key-bindings for a game but I wasn't even sure if half of the Arma commands are used in dayz.

First - if it's night time, you can 'cheat' by cranking up Brightness, Gamma, and most importantly, set HDR to Very High. It feels cheap, but I think it's a much better approximation of what it's like outside at night once your eyes adjust. (Either that, or find another server. Most servers are set to their local time-zone, so if you play on a low-ping server at night, chances are it'll be night in-game. That being said, some servers are behind a few hours so you can login at 9pm and find it to be 5pm in-game).

Off the top of my head, here are a few key things that might not be obvious:

      Basic need-to-know:
      • G - Gear (look through your stuff)
      • F - cycles through Fire-modes (auto/semi/burst) and weapons (incl. flares, etc)
      • ALT - free look. While you're walking/jogging straight, you can turn your head and scan the area
      • NumEnter - 3rd person cam

      Interacting with other players:
      • \ - salute (not available when crouched or prone) - visually show your friendly.
      • CTRL - double-tapping CTRL raises/lowers your rifle. Note: There's no way to lower your pistol, though entering Gear menu does cause your avatar to raise his pistol.
      • CapsLock - PTT for in-game VOIP - there are several 'channels', please make sure you're in the "Direct" channel.
      • , and . - change channels for text-chat/VOIP. You can talk to everyone on the server/team/vehicle, or everyone within earshot. (I usually set this once to Direct and then leave it... though Group [blue] seems to be used the most for text comms - important for dealing with other players. Tip: Use the direct VOIP channel to alert players to your presence. "Hey, can you hear me in there? I'm friendly, coming into the barn in Pavlovo")

edit: one last thing - if you double tap some things, it toggles that control. For example, SHIFT. Normally it's run default, hold shift to walk. If you double tap it, that switches and it's walk by default, hold shift to run. Same with free look: double-tap Alt, and you're permanently in free-look mode. Double-tap again to go back to aiming.

The default starting gear is two bandages ( cures condition 'bleeding'), one painkillers (fixes pain, a shaking effect applied to first person view), one morphine (fixes broken bones), one canteen(fixes thirst, and can be refilled at wells/ponds), two cans of beans (fixes hunger and increases 'blood'), one road flare (pack of ten, throw like grenade for night illumination, can pick up and carry with you), one Makarov (fixes zombies/enemy players), six Makarov mags (fixes out of ammo for Makarov. It might be four mags, I don't remember), and a patrol pack that has eight slots.

You do not start with a map, compass, watch, binocs, nvgs, or a long gun. This is from memory, I haven't died in a while.

Most people use an external map, this one seems to be most popular: http://avidblur.com/arma2/

Not until you find one. But what Iamthefallen linked is the best map out there so far.
I used to alt tab to do a map check too, until i found one.

If you're thirsty or hungry, needing bandage, or painkillers, etc.
That action is no longer in your action menu (scroll wheel).

You need to press "G" for Gear
Then Right-Click on the item then Left-Click on the option.

Also, Items to be used cannot be in your backpack. Must be in your primary or secondary slots.
                  i.e.
                  To Drink water
                  Press G
Right click on the Waterbottle icon
                  Left click on "Drink Water"

                  Rinse and repeat for others

Is the 'you lose something if it won't fit' bug a DayZ bug or an ArmA bug?
