  • Calling Squads

It's been discussed before but I can't find the thread, but there is nothing more agitating for me than to load up and see that the first squads created are atk choppers (instantly locked) and jets (instantly locked) and then right afterwards 3-man-tank (instantly locked). Seriously, what is it with people claiming assets and sharing only sharing with their buddies?! I've done enough infantry work for my time and I'd like to try out the bigger things once in a while.

    Re: Calling Squads

I have seen plenty discussed about this. Nothing much can really be done except asking for invites into these squads(which the majority of the time you get turned down or no response at all), if you happen to take any of the assets without being in those squads then a person takes a chance at being griped at by the CO or the admins. I think it is wrong to a point but then again I can understand it. No need for more than 3 people in a tank squad unless they are multiple tanks. Which is better anyway so the tanks are backed up. Tanks are more effective moving together instead of being loners that you see so much of. Same can go for the heli's and even jets. The role of the F16 in the game is to escort the A10, not run off and do what you want. A10's usually do not last long at all due to this.
Biggest thing I get so ticked off about is seeing the one man tankers, APC'ers and attack heli's. What is the point in going out cause you know your time in the vehicle is going to come to a short demise.

      Re: Calling Squads

I usually lock my squad with the first 2-3 players that join to ensure that I don't get any laggers. After that I gladly invite anyone that loads in slower and asks for an invite for players just like you.
      - While I am sure there are plenty of good pilots and tankers out there that might not have a super fast connections to the server, I would gladly take other players with 30ms ping + 4 gigs of ram that I have played with before over a random lagger or random player with a non-super pc. I would hope that other SL's would give players like you a chance, too, just ask them for an invite. Feel free to get my attention in game and ask for an invite if you see me in a locked squad with less than 6/6 players.

        Re: Calling Squads

I leave it open till i get my allotted players, then lock it. After that if there is a friend i know I'll invite him on request, but the original people will be the fliers usually.

          Re: Calling Squads

I have no problem with the locked assets squads, as long as they do their job!!!!

I would MUCH prefer a bunch of named locked assets squads than "Alpha" "Bravo" "Charlie" who mix and match all their stuff and dont communicate at all.

When commanding, it is SOOOO much easier if the assets in a squad are all simular, so you can directly communicate with your jets, armor and transport.

What pisses me off when someone makes a jets squad, and then disconnects before they even spawn, leaving our team SOL. If your gonna make a jet or armor squad, be damn well sure your gonna be using them.

            Re: Calling Squads

While I see the importance of having a squad dedicated to each vehicle (obvious communications reasons), what is annoying is that should you even approach a vehicle and you are not in that squad you are admonished by not just the general public, but by TG'ers as well. It does feel elitist at times by a few of the regulars (both TG and non-TG).

              Re: Calling Squads

MY question is this. If there is a some-type-of-vehicle squad, and I continually see an unoccupied vehcile of that type at a base, can I grab it? I'm not saying it happens all the time, but a number of times I see unused tanks and APC at a base and I don't grab it because someone has alread created a appropriating named squad. Or worse, you see a tank-less "armor" squad on the other side of the map.

                Re: Calling Squads

To be honest, I have found people creating squads and immediately locking them, and thereby claiming to have divine rights to assets, rather offensive.

However, with PR, I believe it is the nature of the beast. Tanks do not spawn in 30 seconds (AKA Vanilla), so you really need some experienced players to man these things. Airplanes/Choppers also fall under this category. The whole new CAS thing and "lazing" make these tasks even more complex.

The player that takes these assets needs to know what he's doing. If one side's tankers screw up (Think: Al Kurfah) it could ruin the map and make it a gigantic spawn rape (Again, think Al Kurfah).

There are disadvantages to the system: People joining midway though rarely get to man the good stuff. Also, and this is something that I hate to say, there is "elitism," even amongst TGers. This means that a Regular, often TG tagged, will create a locked "jet" squad....and invite his IHS mates or other friends. This makes it hard for new players to learn.

This system has many disadvantages and depends largely on the attitude of the leaders of locked squads. Some are open to new players, some are not. I believe that some TGers or even non-tagged regulars are giving off the wrong impression with their in-game bossing around of assets. This is the reason, I think, why there has been much controversy over "asset-sharing" lately.

                  Re: Calling Squads

I don't mind seeing locked squads for these assets, but when I see the SAME people locking them, then thats when I get irritated. Every map that has choppers in it, I see the same people quickly load in and create a squad. The only way to remedy this situation is to share the assets. Try and go a week without making your uber-1337 Jet or Helo squad, let someone else do it once in a while.

                    Re: Calling Squads

If you see a locked squad, ask for an invite. We should try to let as many people participate as possible. When I run a locked squad I usually let people in if they request it. The other day on Quiling I was running the air squad and a few people wanted in and haven't flown much before, but I let them try it anyways. Did they last long, no, but they got to try it out. It wasn't a major deal for our team to be down one fighter, so if you're in that kind of position please let people in your squad and share the love.

On a side note, if you want to learn to fly practice on a private server. I had to mess around with landing and taking off on Quiling quite a bit before I figured it out, and in a private server you get the jets all to yourself :).

I didn't join a squad once and this guy named Nardini took me into the back room and beat me with a sock of oranges.

                      Re: Calling Squads

I may be spoiled coming from 2142, but there we invited squadmates we wanted in and then ALWAYS opened the squad up. I know the objectives are a bit more complex in PR, but sure you get people in that don't know their stuff, but they will try and learn and help best they can if you tell them what to do. And by creating that teamwork spirit with newcomers, they will come back! And get better! And become TG! And teach others again.

The "Learn TG" squads where you'd have three TG'ers max including the SL comes to mind. I don't know why, but i haven't seen much of this in PR.

                        Re: Calling Squads

Just playing devil's advocate here but I can't see anything in the rules that says someone can't set up a helo squad of their own (a second squad) and then just take the asset. Obviously you can see where this leads but I'm surprised it doesn't already happen.

Without question the most unbelievable thing I have seen so far is squads with names like "LB next round" (I can only assume it was a joke), holy hand grenades people are we taking bookings now!

See you out there, I'll be the one leading the "Spec-Ops/Sniper mostly evenings and some weekends so don't take my kit" squad.
