  • This is great!

I just now noticed that I don't have to put my BF2 CD in to play PR. How long has it been like that? It's terrific!

I was using a miniDVD image through daemon tools for BF2 prior to the patch because I really, really hate spin up delay and other slow response issues due to disk requirements. Daemon tools is one awesome piece of software for a legitimate user who is inconvenienced by DRM.

I am very tempted to try this, who knows if my cd-rom drive will even open the BF2 CD has been in there forever.

This. My disc has been in an ancient DVD-Rom drive for over a year, the only time it's been opened is when my son starts pushing buttons on the case. I'd even contemplated adding a third drive so I could copy discs without having to take it out (the tray mechanism is broken and it doesn't always close properly).

I haven't ever had my disc in my drive when playing. When playing on a laptop, that increases the heat a lot and causes problems. So I went with the minidisc.

does it puts less strain on the computer to pull data from the cd than the harddrive?

No, since the only role the CD plays on a full install is to be present (no data is loaded directly from the disk other than the 'are you there and a real CD' data). ALL game data comes directly from the hard drive. The CD check increases the wear on the CD and the CD drive to do that check, which is why I prefer the virtual drives like the mini-disks which don't have compatibility issues on upgrades like no-CD cracks.

In the olden days (like late 90's) when hard drive space was limited some games allowed partial installs where data would still be stored on the disk because it was less expensive to do that than to buy expensive hard drive space. With today's cheap hard drive space it is a better use of resources to keep it on the hard drive, which is why Steam and other download services are viable now but would not have been back in the 90's.
