Nevermind all that markers and teamwork nonsense, you get extra bandages and a pistol for Pete's sake! I am still coming to terms with the removal of my beret from my British Officer kit, why Devs why do you hate me so!
I'll grant that there are some times when you don't need the officer kit as a SL, when there is no CAS or Arty and the position of the enemy is already known then it does help to bring up extra ammo or another kit like LAT or HAT.
But as a ground rule, there is no reason whatsoever for a SL to leave w/o an Officer's kit because as mentioned, you get more patches if nothing else.

This is a TEAMWORK over SQUADWORK thing.
Personally, i live in my game map, almost to a fault. Every inf marker, or tank marker, etc that i see is top of mind. Those markers help me and benefit my squad immensely. However, when those marks are many minutes old, say a tank moved from one squads location to the next, it be nice to see the update. And btw, how are you calling in CAS for help? Don't you even say sniper kit......!
Q: How many members of Congress does it take to change a light bulb?
A: None. There is nothing wrong with the light bulb; its conditions are improving every day. Any reports of its lack of incandescence are delusional spin from the liberal media. That light bulb has served honorably, and anything you say undermines the lighting effort. Why do you hate freedom?!?
If you're infantry, and you're intentionally going out without an Officer kit, ur likely doin it rong.
If you're swapping out temporarily, there should be a good reason. Like, every now and then I'll swap for a HAT because OHMYGODWHYHASN'TTHATTANKBEENKILLEDYET. Or a crewman to build. Or... taking an enemy kit because no one else in my squad is able to (all who are present are stocked up, others who could are not nearby because they died in our valiant efforts to take the enemy's largest stronghold, which succeeded, of course).
But if you're not using the SL radio, then... well, I could see why you might see no reason to. So, fix that and everyone will understand.
You said that as taliban at the end of a round with one cache left with hideouts already around the cache. Unless you wanted the extra patches or prefer the sl weapons, there was no real point in insisting that sl's had officer kits.
I think it depends on the situation. We could probably come up with tons of scenarios, as others above have, but I think this falls in the, "Let the SL figure it out." category.
For instance, if I know I'm going to be in an area that has supply crates nearby, I may spawn in with a specialist kit and request an officer (scoped or not) and just leave the rope somewhere nearby, either to build with or to access various vantage points.
Besides that, there is usually an officer kit or two lying around if you really need one.
Most if not all of the time the SL should have the SL kit. But there are times where you switch kits out to either heal/revive your squad mates if most of them are down and you have your SAW covering you.
But the benefits of the SL kit, such as the radio, extra patches, purple-freaking smoke and being able to set down firebases are obvious advantages of having the SL kit on you. But there are those moments where you SHOULD switch to another role if there is a threat which demands that you take action by switching kits if there is no other way.

You said that as taliban at the end of a round with one cache left with hideouts already around the cache.
There was ONE hideout north of the northern cache, and none around the southern cache, which is the one the Canadians destroyed. While there are exceptions to this rule (rule = ALWAYS have a SL kit when SL), the game being nearly over is not a legit excuse or exception.
and dont feed me a line about there only being one per squad. i know i play mostly muttrah so i may see the extreme end of this (city maps...), but there is ALWAYS one of those three kits laying around. actually, more than one.
main argument for leaving officer behind: i used to take officer all the time for the sole reason of keeping the map current with markers, but then i figured out people's behavior is not a function of marker changes on the map.....
