  • Fire Teams

I want to start messing with fire teams and real-world maneuvers like using basic formations, overwatch, flanking, etc. So if anybody's interested in practicing with me, look for the squad named ... (drum roll, please) ... FIRETEAMS!

    Standard ground assault squad:

    Alpha: Assault, Assault/Support
    Bravo: Assault, Assault/Support
    Charlie: Medic, Assault (Squad Leader)

Assault is the jack-of-all, having body armor, excellent ranged firepower, grenade launcher, and the all-powerful (and completely underutilized!) SMOKE grenade.

I think a squad of this make-up can take down just about anything as long as the squad can replenish the grenades in the field with a Support guy or two. The Medic also has excellent ranged ability for cover fire and can keep the SL in good health. The SL can provide long-range cover fire and smoke for his two assault elements.

It's all theory at this point but I think it can work well with practice. Smoking and flanking would be absolutely essential and if the team gets really good at it, I think this type of squad can be very successful.

Who wants to try it out? :)

I'm down Rizzo. I'll be back on starting Tuesday nite, so I'll look for ya. Trying to get my buddy who's currently in the 3rd Infantry Div. to get BF2 so he can show me some solid tactical fundamentals too...

I am game. I will look for you in game.
Why no AT, at least one?
I was never a Marine or Infantry, but in our gun sections we carried an AT4 or two at all times.

Rizzo - dat's da bomb. I'll be watching for it.

Agreed on the AT thing. A squad without AT is just 6 sitting ducks before a tank, or even an APC.

            Re: Fire Teams

Because AT kit is really only good at one thing: AT. The MP5 is pretty crappy in a firefight so that guy is essentially going to be useless for flanking maneuvers, covering fire, etc.. I'm thinking that a few guys with 203's definitely and a couple others with regular frags won't be sitting ducks vs armor. but that's what practice is for. :) If it turns out AT is needed then we'll try that route.

I won't be around much this week either. I'm going away for a couple days and then I'll be back and then I'm off again for a long weekend. :(

              Re: Fire Teams

I'm definitely up for this. I'm on the last couple phases of moving into a new apartment now, but I should be back playing most nights next week.

              - I've mostly played medic/AT(and occasionally Support/engineer) myself, but the couple of times I've gone Assault I did enjoy quite a bit. =D

              - As for needing to carry an AT all the time, I definitely agree that he's pretty well worthless 90% of the time, plus you really need 2 on hand for that "instant" armor kill.(And they'd have to be good, and working together...fireteam?) Therefore I would recommend against a dedicated AT and simply have 1 or more guy spawn as AT when needed. (I think it's fair to assume a casualty or two when you unexpectedly hit hostile armor)
Combat is very simple, there is a first place and a second place. Second place is laying face down in the mud...sometimes, so is first place.

Sounds interesting. I'll be one of the assault guys ;)

                  Re: Fire Teams

Whether it's AT or Spec Ops, nothing is more discouraging than having your squad stopped in it's tracks over and over when confronted by armor. You're just shut down, and it sucks. You have to wait for someone to come help you. Likely, that won't happen, and you'll be respawning, while the squad with the AT at least has something to do before they bite it - and they might succeed.

As for the sorry MP5 - yeah. Not much good, but it's fine for flanking - cuz when you flank, you're more likely to get close up. Don't use it to keep them pinned down while you flank, use it to do the flanking.

I really don't believe M203 grenades are gonna scratch the armor. Might as well throw rocks.

                    Re: Fire Teams

3-4 assaults nading a tank from various directions will kill it. Especially if you aim for the top and back.

                      Re: Fire Teams

I would probably make Charlie a specialist squad. (A medic, an engineer, AT and possibly an assaulter or two or a sniper).

Found a link to some decent tactics and discussion of fire teams and assault/defense teams. It could be useful for getting everyone on the squad on the same page (e.g. knowing what bounding overwatch is and how to execute it).

The 'Squad Leader Series' link on that page has some good info on what's being discussed in this thread...

i noticed you dint include snipers anywhere....im senceing some predjudice and unfairness.......but then again i might join the other team if you are goin to have that many poorly armed troops and snipe you from there!....j/k
that sounds like a good idea trooper.

                              Re: Fire Teams

I have to disagree about the AT observations.

Co-ordinating an entire squad to launch 203 rounds when two shots from at AT will kill a tank seems more hassle than it's worth. And those 203's wont do much against an approaching support/assault helicopter, but when an AT gets the choppers attention, a couple of 203's into the crew compartment can do wonders. A couple of ammo bags dropped near a good hide position for the AT means you have terrific overwatch against both Armor and Aircraft. And the splash damage from an AT can clear a sandbag position from much further away than a 203, but up close...203 all the way.

And yea, the MP5 is pretty weak.

                              3 Assault
                              1 AT
                              1 Medic
                              1 Support
