  • Game will not display menu

I just got BF2 today. After I installed it, I went to play single-player, and the game worked smoothly and flawlessly, no performance issues, other than a 3-second delay when changing teams. When I attempted to quit to the main menu, all I got was the background music and a black screen with a cursor. I had to Ctrl+Alt+Del to clear the game from the computer. All subsequent attempts to open the game bring up the same music & black screen after the intro movies. I downloaded the 1.02 patch, and it didn't help. Here are the relevant system specs:

    Processor: AMD Athlon XP2600+, MMX, 3DNow, ~1.9GHz
    RAM: 512 MB
Video Card: ATI Radeon 9200SE AGP (with latest drivers)
    Video Memory: 128MB
    Free Hard Drive Space: 7.34GB

I can Alt+tab and work with BF2 in the background just fine. I get the feeling that the game would work all right if the damned menu would only show up.

try removing the background and intro movies to the game:
    Disabling the Intro Movies

The introductory movies to BF2, although fun to watch the first couple of times, fast become quite annoying, adding to the startup times for the game, as well as the memory usage (the main movie is 135MB in size). To disable them permanently, I don't recommend deleting the movie files - this may cause problems with verification of client information on certain servers and/or with Punkbuster.

Instead, simply rename the relevant files in your \Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\Movies\ directory to something else (e.g. rename the Intro.bik to Intro.backup). The files to rename are: Dice.bik, EA.bik, Intro.bik, Legal.bik and Welcome.bik. This will mean the intro movies are all skipped as BF2 starts to load. If you find the movies playing in the background of the Login screen and Settings screens annoying, you can also rename the menu.bik and menu_loggedin.bik to something else as well.

Removing all movies from the game can save over 250MB of data being loaded up during the start of the game and being placed into memory - this will help smooth your gameplay particularly for those with less RAM. If for any reason you experience any problems with the game after renaming the movies, simply rename them back to their original names.

      Tried that

Also, tried updating my video drivers.... now the game craps out before it even gets to the menu.

        if that doesn't work...try this

Go into the BIOS and its under the Advanced tab - you can change your AGP setting from 8X to 4X

I followed the instructions there, and the "Advanced" button leads to the monitor, not the video card, settings.
