  • Suggest a budget motherboard/CPU combo

For Battlefield 2. My friend's 1.7 P4 isn't cutting it and he doesn't have a lot of cash for an upgrade. He needs at least 3 (maybe 4) DDR slots, ATA connections for his hard drive, and an 8X AGP slot.

Would the AMD Athlon XP 2800+ Barton 266MHz FSB 512KB L2 Cache Socket A Processor Here

and this motherboard do the trick?

Can't tell what motherboard that is, just takes me to a list of em. But they're all PC Chips.. Not a brand I trust.

For Socket A, I'd go for an nForce 2 Ultra 400 board. Either MSI K7N2 Delta2 (I used to have one, worked great) or Abit NF7.

Don't forget to consider the Sempron 64 chips like this one. Quite a few Socket 754 boards to choose from.. nForce3 would be the chipset to look for. If your friend can swing it, a setup like that would be better than a normal Athlon XP. Don't have experience with the 754 boards, but I remember hearing good stuff about this Chaintech VNF3. Probably will need PC3200 RAM as well, but depending on the RAM in the P4 system, he'd probably need new RAM for an Athlon XP system too.

Are the Sempron chips decent for BF2? I was looking at the Athalon 64 2800+ Clawhammer also.

It'd be better than a plain ole Athlon XP, IMHO.

If you're going with a normal Athlon64, then go for the Venice core, or see if you can find a 3000+ Winchester somewhere. Socket 939 so you can get the newer / better boards. 90nm process so it'll run cooler. Venice / Winchester are just all around better and also more expensive, which is why I pointed ya towards the Sempron.

The 2800 clawhammer is $120, a 3300 Sempron is $130. Never seen benchmarks so I don't know which would run faster, but given the 500, umm.. mhz rating?.. difference, I'd have to guess the Sempron would be faster. The Sempron would definitely run cooler since it is also 90nm vs 0.13 m for the Clawhammer. Sempron is 1.4V vs 1.5V for the Clawhammer. My prefrences make me lean towards a slightly slower but cooler system vs a slightly faster but hotter one anyways.

          I think I found a deal on a Winchester 3000+.
Is it a good processor for BF2?

Yes, that's exactly what I'm running in my computer.
