  • Manually editting your prefix

Seems like the new prefix introduced in the 1.0.3 patch only allows [ and ] as "special" characters. That's a limitation of the input box, because you can actually use | to make the "proper" TG tags. Stolen from this thread:
    1. Open up Windows Explorer, your Terminal, or whatever file browser you may be using.
    2. Navigate over to your "My Documents" folder (Default: C:\Documents and Settings\YOURNAME\My Documents\).
    3. Navigate into \Battlefield 2\Profiles\.
    4. Open up Global.com using any text editor (Notepad will do).
    5. There should be a line that contains the GlobalSettings.setNamePrefix command. Usually, this will be the second line in the file.
    6. Whatever is in between the two double quotes following this command will be your prefix. Edit it to your desire. (Example: GlobalSettings.setNamePrefix "|TG|")
    7. Save the file (File -> Save), and exit out of your text editor.
    8. That's it, you're done! The next time you login to BF2, you should now have the correct prefix. Note that if the changes are made while BF2 is open, it will NOT work. You must have BF2 closed.

This method can also be used if your prefix gets "stuck" and you can't change it for one reason or another. Just edit the file and put in what you what.

    Re: Manually editting your prefix

    I found the file (it is called Global.con) and changed the line. But after dropping into the server (with command line "C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +szx 1280 +szy 1024 +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +playername P +playerPassword B +joinServer 70.86.19.218 +port 16567 +password C") I still have my usual playername.
    Any hints?

Hmm. Did the prefix disappear from the file?

        Re: Manually editting your prefix

Hehe, woot, my post got quoted!

When you load up the login screen, the prefix box will ALWAYS be blank. Even if you have a prefix set and saved, it will not show it yet. After you login, look at the bottom of the screen for the username that your player will have in-game.

Tip I learned last night --

I wanted to delete my lame prefix, but as SaladFork said, it's blank when you login. Hence, nothing to delete.

If you type in a few characters ("asdf"), then delete those, it will remove your prefix completely.

            Stupid EA.

              Re: Manually editting your prefix

I just can't seem to get this to work. Every time I start BF2 after adding the prefix in the .con file it vanishes in game and in the .con file. (Just so you know, I use the username and password commands in the link to play BF2 so I normally bypass the login screen altogether.) The only way I can get any prefix to showup is using the in-game text box and even then it seems to just randomly disappear. Is there any was to set the prefix the same way the username and password? (Like this: "C:/.../BF2.exe +username millipede777 +password IDontThinkSo +prefix |TG|")

Maybe mark the file read-only since it's getting blanked out there?

That worked, and I still get to bypass the whole login screen and the intro movies... now if I could just get rid of the 'Message from EA' popup... anyways, thanks perry.

                    Re: Manually editting your prefix

My prefix doesn't display the last |

I tried using ] but that doesn't display either.

                    My file looks like
                    GlobalSettings.setDefaultUser "0002"
                    GlobalSettings.setNamePrefix "|TG-UK|"
In game it displays as |TG-UK Preston85
                    missing the last |

                    Any ideas?

Hey thanks Perry...Now that I have got the prefix do you guys know if we can edit our screen name. I was a moron and used a 1 at the end of my name because someone else had it. I was to anxious to play the game when I got it and just plugged the one in instead of using special characters. Anyone have an idea if it can be done...

Would this also work if I was starting the game through Xfire? I want my prefix, but also want to be able to just jump into the game my fellow clan member is playing in.

I use XFire and it works for me. It shouldn't be an issue.
