  • Is my video card overheating, or what?

Before I start, I have a crappy Dell. A crappy Dell with a few modifications.

    Dimension 4500

    Stock motherboard specs:
    D845EPT2
    Socket 478
    533 & 400 MHz FSB
    AGP 2X/4X (1.5V)

    Stock 250, yes, 250W PSU
    2.4GHz Pentium 4 (Stock)
    2 x 512MB DDR400 RAM (Matched)
    2 x 7200RPM 40GB ATA HDDs
    nVidia 7800GS OC 512MB AGP (4X/8X) Video

    ----

Sometimes, well, recently, when I turn, or pick up a kit, even, my screen will stop, go to black, and then pick back up at its 'normal' 15-18FPS. The most frames I ever get is ~25 in calm urban areas, and ~50 on an aircraft carrier (full 64 man). I'm 99.999% sure that it's this crappy motherboard holding me back.

If so, how will this setup run?

    Asus K8N Motherboard
    3400+ 2.4GHz AMD Athlon 64 Processor
    3 x 512MB RAM (2 matched, one unmatched, all DDR400)
    7800GS OC 512MB Video
    Themaltake 430W PSU (18A on the 12V)

doesnt the 7800GC require a 400wat or above psu? Maybe you need to up that and see what happens

I'm thinking it's the PSU as well. I run a 7800GS 256MB on pretty much the same specs you have (2.66Ghz with 1GB RAM) with no problems. The difference is I'm running with an Ultra 500W power supply.

change the psu. tiger direct has a coolmax 500w for $40 after rebates. don't buy ultra if you can avoid it.

Why not Ultra? I've had GREAT luck with my Ultra 500W.

should be easy to find out... there's a number of programs out there that will monitor GPU temperatures... try speedfan. play until it freezes, then check out the peak value... if it's passing 80*c, you have serious cooling problems
