    Re: Introduce yourself

Sup everyone. I started playing PR at the 1.0 release, but I'm getting discouraged from the frequent mid-round crashes. From the impression I'm getting, that's what lead to the death of the Tactical Gamer PR server in the first place. The #1 thing I'm looking forward to most in Squad is client and server stability. With those, I'm sure TG will thrive once again, and I can't wait.

When the TG server goes live, I'm expecting it to have rules requiring microphone use. Is that likely?

I hope not honestly, unless you are leaning towards the competitive side. I can understand that aspect having led some comp teams of other games in the past. However rules PERTAINING to mic use is understandable in comp and casual.

        Re: Introduce yourself

Previous titles here at TG have required the use of a mic by squad leaders. Not sure how Squad will handle the issue, but regardless, voice comms improve the game play and teamwork immensely, for everyone, so it is highly encouraged.

          Brisk - welcome to TG!

We will have rules that will require players to work together and to respect the chain of command. Use of a microphone will not be required, but it is going to be highly encouraged. A player must communicate with his Squad and within the framework of the chain of command, microphone or not.

I hope that answers your question.

This is a long standing approach to the issue that is a nice balance. We've had a number of great players who excelled at teamwork but didn't have a mic. But that's rare for server regulars. I'd guess for the most part at least 60-75% of the players will have mics and will use them.

@ disp...is there something about having a mic if you are leading a squad? I forget.

I've enjoyed several rounds in the past with SLs who didn't have microphones in the pre-mumble PR days. I would think that this is a rarity nowadays.

The quick answer is that as long as you are able to communicate with your squad, issue orders (which is entirely possible without a mic by spotting and placing order markers) and follow CO orders, then you are more than welcome to play here whether you have a mic or not. It might not be the best way to do it, but if you can type, lead a squad and fight effectively, more power to you. I've played with plenty of people who do have microphones that don't communicate at all and several others who always typed that I would trust in my squad any day.

Also, some people might have a mic but might not be able to use it depending on their environment. Perhaps there is a sleeping spouse or baby nearby, etc. etc.

So, bottom line is this: the admins have better things to do with their time than to police all of the players as to whether they have mics or not. We won't be kicking for not having a mic, but we will remove players who do not communicate or operate within the framework of their squad and their team.

Edit: Let's move any type of rules discussion to a different thread. Actually, let's just wait a bit, as the admin team is currently discussing our first shot at the rules and will be posting them soon. After that, we can discuss any clarifications or whatever about the rules. Adherence to the TG Primer will be our main focus.

                    Re: Introduce yourself

Either because of E-Male's video or in spite of it (I'm afraid to self-reflect enough as discovering the answer would require) I've bought in to Squad.

Looking forward to seeing you all on the battlefield.

                      Re: Introduce yourself

I, too, have preordered the KoolAid.

Squad looks like the best of PR, with some new improvements, and several ideas adapted from RO2 (it wasn't all terrible; also Unreal Engine). In fact, I'm guessing Offworld Industries looked at RO2s launch where TWI promised medium tanks, light tanks, and halftracks and only had two (buggy) medium tanks ready at launch. "Let's not do that", said an unnamed Offworld Industries representative, probably.

I've been around off and on (mostly off) for about 10 years. If I like a game I'll really sink my teeth into it, but it's been about eight years since I've actually felt that way about a title.

If Squad is amazing I'll be around quite a bit. Right now, I have a mixture of skepticism and hope. Considering I preordered, hope appears to be winning the day!

                                Re: Introduce yourself

Hey guys! Man, has it been a while.

I was around here about 5 years ago, quite involved with the BF2142 server and all of the joys that it brought my otherwise lackluster life of my younger years. Squad has come around and caught my attention, so I thought "hey, I'm going to see if TG still is up and running" and boy am I happy to see you all again.

It's like I have partial amnesia; I forgot most of my relations on here (except that I [think] I make di1lweed's sig image. Hey man!), so I'll be around in between college and work to play some Squad with you all!

My steam is "penguins227" - feel free to give me and add and I'll be playing it as soon as early access is available (this broke college student can't fork up $60, but I could do $30, heh. Who needs food anyways).
