As far as researching goes, if they were testing 128 players on maps that have been designed with 64 players in mind, it's not a big surprise it wasn't any fun.
I think the map size/layout is the key to how fun a game will be with different amounts of players, but I'm not sure that even if they made a map large enough to properly accommodate 256 players how fun it would be. After all, how large would the map have to be? It could become a real nightmare, even with vehicles.
Tiger got to hunt, Bird got to fly, Man got to sit and wonder 'Why, why, why?'
Tiger got to sleep, Bird got to land, Man got to tell himself he understand.
Could not agree more with you Fuzz, I call Bull on this. If you have TESTED 128 or 256 why not release it as an option? Why not mod tools, then people can do what they want. The more I read from this tool, the more he annoys me, and makes me realise it is still pandering to the console generation, regardless of what they say.
His comment that "Between 32-40" is most fun is rubbish, and BC2 proves that. Maybe they should be forced to play PR, and see just how fun it is, and maybe there is hope for the future. I don't understand his attitude. Sure, we COULD do more than 64, but why would we. Kind of like, we COULD make cars, but lets use horses, or we COULD go to the moon, but I like the view from here just fine. What a load of excuses. Push the boundaries. Or don't bother.
As you can see, I am getting increasingly worried and frustrated. And they are REALLY pushing the crap about the SP. I could not care less about it tbh.
I think they just were not thinking about the possibility of running higher numbers on maps specifically made for 256. Personally, we now know that if we can make a good mod for BF3, down the road, it could change the number of players...
Interested in listening to guitar playing and a good conversation, look for me on TS.

His statement about it being most fun with 32-40 players worries me that in that I suspect it relates to level design(size).
This^^ is more what I was trying to get at. It all just seems excuses to make up for their own shortcomings. I can totally get not everyone likes PR, that's fine. As much as on one level I want this to be PR2.0 I know that it won't be, and I am fine with a vanilla style game, but that is no reason for them not to push the boundaries, or to not make this game the best it can be.
If anything, this encourages me that the development team is doing their due diligence. They're actually testing things for optimal gameplay, instead of just adding in features to get more sales. Sure, they could simply be lazy, but I'm assuming something as major as playercount is something the execs would give strong consideration to.
Think about it. I would like to think that they're not pushing for 128 players for a reason. It just makes little sense not to. What I mean by that is, 128 players in terms of a major game with this type of hype and fanbase, is a significant number... arguably a headliner ("BF3 to feature 128 players!"). I know other games have reached that number, but I don't think they can relate in terms of following, both players and media. A number like that is likely to garner more attention, and thus more sales. They could simply just make small adjustments to maps and add in 128 players, but they didn't. They saw it lead to less than optimum gameplay and decided to stay at 64.
I think that 64 players is the maxiumum of players they can give a pleasant experience to without having to do more work. The maps are big enough to house 64 players and small enough for 24-32 players (console). Business wise it is a good decision.
My personal opinion is that I would like the mod community to get acces to tools so they themselves can add 128+ player maps and other content. That however would be a bad business decision since players will play the game they made too long and maybe not pick up BFBC3 modern combat warfare evolved.
From the article:
Maybe we haven't done our design work good enough, but we just feel like there's no point in going higher than 64
