    Battlefield 3 @ E3 2011

Vehicles in Battlefield 3 have two new features. First is they now have regenerating armor. If it goes down below a certain threshold your vehicle will be disabled (you will see sparks) and not being able to move, although the turret can still move. Vehicles as well as soldiers are now fully customizable. In the demo, the LAV-25 has the main gun, an added a coax cannon to take out infantry and added thermal vision.
Speaking of LAN, I was told there would be no LAN support.
EA had also told us that knifing from the front is possible, but not an instant kill. I was also told you can pull out the knife (possibly the #5 slot) and not have to use quick knife.

Regenerating armor? What is this, EVE Online?

That will kill teamwork. They are encouraging solo tank operaters.

The question is how fast armor will regenerate. In BF2 vehicles could repair/heal them self magically when next to one another which is a form of regenerating and it worked out well. It will take a whole squad effort (lots of teamwork) to put out that rolling beast with magical wrench and not a single recon with c-4 or engi with tracer darts. Once more vehicles will be feared on the battlefield, i like it.

From what I heard in an article (don't recall where but it was during E3), it only regenerates if it has barely been damaged, and any more serious damage needs to be fixed by an engi.

I can kind of see the point of this. It's not going to help when you're actively under fire, but let's say you take a rocket from a random guy right before you kill him, you won't necessarily have to get out of the vehicle to repair it if you don't expect to be under fire for a while.

And yeah, compared to the magical proximity healing of BF2, this is nothing heh. Taking down 2 tanks next to each other (with maybe an engi outside) was near impossible in BF2.

sry, there should not be any self regen, proximity regen or lack of fire regen... I would like to see a total lack of health regen unless by medical supplies.

What is considered under fire in a armored vehicle? Only rockets? Grenades, small arms? and what would be the time limit between hits to allow the regen? that was the problem with BF2.. When I played 2v2 tanks leagues, my partner and I could whip a team in the first two minutes of contact by fire avoidance, combined concentrated fire and proximity repair alone. We would stay side by side, and keep the enemy on the flank and roll back and forth, with my tank taking the brunt of fire.
Most of them were doomed in the first volley... once you take out the weak link, it is 2v1.

You should have to get out of a vehicle to fix it.. requires teamwork = win

Which is obviously going to happen, regenerating armor or not.

Anyway, everyone seem to get supression wrong. Its not a support only ability, EA people have confirmed that everyone can supress, althoguh support is obviously going to be better at it with lmg's.

I get their thinking. Vehicles in BF2 were not as appealing and IO server seem to be the majority. 1942 was the opposite. IMO the popularity of Karkand and IO mode were due in large part to bad design decisions with regard to 3 main things, vehicle coding, level design, and the points/unlock system. Dice is now putting a lit into the 3 things I mentioned and want to make vehicles more appealing. I just disagree on how they do it. There should be no health regen period.

Hey you folks can knock on the regen thing, but I am totally digging the vehicle being inoperable when it reaches a certain amount of damage. If you think a motionless tank with regen kills teamwork, unable to take cover and repair, I will have to respectfully disagree. Sure a careful tank hidden in decent cover has an advantage, but that is totally depndant on terrain and tank driver skill (I do not know a high percentage of folks who can take advantage of this). An engi in armor now sure does not promote teamwork while he is sniping from across the map. A mortar strike on an incapacitated vehicle sure sounds appealing on that rush map where the first phase is just hoping the tankers can't snipe well to have a chance at holding them off.
