  • So you've lived in a cave for the past six months.. (BF3 starter )

...and you heard that Battlefield 3 is supposed to come out some time this year, and now you're itching to find out more and whether it's for you and what everyone's talking about.

This started as a quick resource summary, but expanded to what I hope will be a 15 minute starting point to catch up to what's going on with the PC version to get you up to speed. There's a ton of information available for any given subject, and even more speculation. Until the final game is released it's all subject to change.

    Overview and Ordering
Battlefield 3 is the successor to the hugely successful Battlefield 2 and is scheduled for release October 25, 2011. It is being developed by DICE and published by EA.

It is touted as - and expected to be - a true successor providing the full 64 player combined arms experience that BF2 had. It is not a sequel to Battlefield: Bad Company 2, the most recent game in the series. BF3 is based on the Frostbite 2.0 game engine which provides spectacular graphics, realistic body movements, and destructive environments.

Battlefield 3 is available now for pre-Order, and depending on where you order it different promotional items will be included. Ordering the Battlefield 3 Limited Edition includes the expansion pack "Battlefield 3: Back To Karkand" at no extra charge.

    More:

    Origin and Battlelog
Origin is EA's digital distribution platform, similar to Valve's Steam and replaces the EA store and EA Download manager. EA is in the process of upgrading existing EA user accounts to Origin accounts, your identity, order history and preferences will remain unchanged. Your Origin ID is effectively what you sign in with to play BF3 and it will also be your soldier name.

Battlelog provides the entire menu system for BF3, it's implemented as a browser plugin and will feature social network tools, feeds and detailed player stats. Battlelog also lets you manage your friends lists, squad up, create platoons, and use voice chat. BF3 will have no in-game browser or menu system. You will use a server browser in Battlelog and launch the game directly from there. When you launch the game, no animations or videos are shown, it just connects you directly to the server.

There has been a lot of confusion, misinformation, and criticism about Origin and Battlelog.

    More:

    Public Beta Testing
BF3 was released for public beta testing on September 29th. The Beta has ended and some changes requested by players will be rolled into the final release.

    The Game
BF3 will offer 9 maps at launch, all modes are playable on all maps with a boundary limiting the available map area depending on mode. It will feature four man squads and the return of squad leaders, but no commander. VOIP will be available in some form not yet clear.

Compared to Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Battlefield 3 will have more than 10 times the hardware unlocks spread over weapons, weapons attachments, gadgets, and vehicles. In addition, you can unlock accessories for each weapon, allowing you to customize them to a great extent.

BF3 will have over 20 drivable vehicles in multiplayer spread over 12 classes. Some of the vehicle classes include armored transports, infantry fighting vehicles, main battle tanks, scout helicopters, attack helicopters, fighter jets, and attack jets

Vehicle customization is much bigger, deeper, and more tactical in nature than in previous Battlefield games with over 80 unlockable specialization upgrades spread over the different vehicle classes. Each customizable vehicle class has three unlock slots: one secondary weapon slot, one gadget slot, and one upgrade slot. By playing a vehicle class and getting kills with it, you gradually unlock more specializations for that particular vehicle class.

There will be five multiplayer game modes at launch.
    • Team Deathmatch (12v12) - In Team Deathmatch, two teams of 12 players each duke it out on tight knit maps with a distinct infantry focus. No vehicles are available.
    • Squad Deathmatch (4 squads of 4 players) - The squad that reaches the set kill number first is declared the winner. Light armor is available to break a deadlock.
    • Rush (16v16) - First introduced in Battlefield: Bad Company, Rush has now made its way to the heart of the Battlefield series in Battlefield 3. An objective based mode, the attackers have to arm and detonate pairs of M-COM stations in each area of the map to unlock the next area and the next pair of M-COM stations. While defenders have an unlimited amount of spawn tickets, attackers only get new tickets every time they destroy a pair of M-COMs. If all M-COM stations on the entire map are destroyed, the attackers are declared the winning team. If the defenders manage to deplete the attacker’s tickets to zero (by killing them), the defenders are declared the winners.
    • Squad Rush (4v4) - In Squad Rush there are only 2 bases with 1 M-COM station per base, meaning that every M-COM taken or defended in Squad Rush is vital to the victory or defeat of the game.
    • Conquest (32v32) - Conquest is the game mode best suited for the experience of all-out vehicle warfare. In Conquest, two teams fight for control of a number of flags by being the dominant force in the vicinity of each base. Capture and keep control of a majority of the flags and the enemy team will bleed tickets. Killing enemies will also reduce their ticket count, and the first team to run out of tickets loses.

It is expected that Conquest will be the primary game mode at Tactical Gamer with all the awesome team play that 64 players combined arms can provide.

BF3 will have four classes with different weapons, tools, and abilities.
    • Assault class can have medic abilities like healing and reviving teammates.
    • Engineers can repair vehicles and can carry an RPG and demolitions.
    • Support class carries a light machine gun and can provide suppressive fire that effects enemies stress levels and accuracy.
    • Recon class can carry a sniper rifle and has gadgets to provide intel to his team.

          Great job!

          3) Support game play in a near-simulation environment. Where the focus of play would not be solely on doing what it takes to win, but doing so utilizing real-world combat strategy and tactics rather than leveraging exploits provided to players by the design of the game engine.
