  • BF3, Why there's no Commander/SL roles

The Commander role didn't make it into Battlefield 3 because DICE felt it was "a bit flawed", general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson has revealed.

It was, however, "a hot topic" at DICE HQ.

"When the dev team sat down and thought about this, the Commander role was a very important and hot topic in the studio I have to say," Troedsson said, speaking at the Eurogamer Expo 2011 today.

"Some people wanted us to implement it in the absolute same way as we had before; some of us wanted us to reinvigorate how we do it.

"I don't know how many people have tried to play as a Commander in Battlefield 2, but it's kind of a strange experience. Everyone agrees that that actual role of the Commander is very, very cool. But the problem is that only one person per team could play it, and it was always the highest ranking one.

"But even for the people that played as a Commander, the first thing they did was what? They ran off to a corner somewhere and lay down there and tried to hide so the Spec Ops guy wouldn't find them when he was going to blow up the installations.

"They basically spent the whole match lying on the ground on some obscure corner of the map, hoping not to get knifed in the back and trying to support people."

Troedsson concluded: "There was something very cool about the Commander role and there was also something a bit flawed, we have to say."

Battlefield 3 retains the essence of the Commander via squad leaders and gadgets. Squad leaders can order artillery strikes, Troedsson said, and the ability to order a mortar strike is available as a multiplayer unlock.

There's the option to set up gadgets on the ground or on rooftops to scan and target vehicles. There's a remote-control UAV drone that pin-ponts infantry and vehicles, too.

"That's why the idea that we've had, the team-play elements of the Commander mode that we really like, we have tried to push down to the squads and the squad leaders," said Troedsson.

"We've tried to push this down into the squads so they can both fill the roles that the Commander had, but then also be an active soldier on the battlefield."

Well that's pretty cool! Well have to see how it works!

Exactly. The commander's job was to command. They make it sound like a bad thing that he would go hiding somewhere.

They can spin it anyway they want, but the lack of a commander is a blow to high-level teamplay (which didn't happen on 95% of servers anyway, so perhaps they felt it was a non-issue).

I'm sad to see the commander gone. The game is definitely worse for it -- I only hope our community can find a way to compensate for it.

      3) Support game play in a near-simulation environment. Where the focus of play would not be solely on doing what it takes to win, but doing so utilizing real-world combat strategy and tactics rather than leveraging exploits provided to players by the design of the game engine.

They couldnīt make commander work so they replaced the role with, what? Nothing that resembles the original idea, the commander wasnīt about doing mortar strikes or deploying UAVs.

Who says a commander has the have a star next to their name in game to lead the team? If you can get all the squad leaders into the same channel I don't see it being difficult to assign one the say in general strategy. If anything is going to kill teamwork and command structure its a lack of good VOIP, not having a commander or not.

Besides, giving the power to the SL's isn't a bad thing in my opinion, I think it will help game balance and enjoyment in the long run because it eliminates the instances where one team had an very poor commander (or none) and the other had a very competent one. Yes you can say "that's life, suck it up" but in the end whats good for game balance is good for the game, so to me (and dice apparently) no commander = a better game.

                  Re: BF3, Why there's no Commander/SL roles

I don't see it as a huge loss....even in 2142 we had commanders but 80% of the time the SL told us where to go, when to advance, and when to fall back and regroup. I have even had TG SL's say "commander wants us to go to X but if we do that we will loose Y....so were staying here" To me the new system seems to incorporate the perks of Sl we seen in 2142 with the ability to use the tools of the BF2 commander. If anything it means you need MORE teamwork, the SL's now coordinate amongst themselves and give orders to their individual squads. From the sound of the whole fire team thing this will be a capability within battlelog chat,
"Everyone makes fun of us rednecks with our big trucks and all our guns........until the zombie apocalypse"

                    Good points guys.

Alos, my point in posting the battlelog pic is to show off the "Platoon" drop down on the menu bar.

Some of my best games in 2142 involved a commander. We need a command structure thatsīs enforced by the game. Itīs the best way of getting consistent quality in teamwork.

They talk about a guy sitting in the corner, hoping not to die from a spec ops, or whatever. I think they could of made the position selectable, but instead of spawning in a avatar, they could of just not spawned anything in, and just bring up the CO menu/dashboard. Then allow that person to do the same thing in game, without being on the battlefield at all.

Some of the team leading tools of the commander are gone in game, like talk to SL or that SL gets icons on the map where the Commander orders something. We can ofc solve the lack of commander partially via TS, but without the visual cues.

So much for following orders. That is really sad to hear that some here at TG would do that.
