  • Interesting tidbit regarding the hope for BF3 mods

Could it be that in a few months, DICE reverses its "don't touch our stuff" decision like MS did with that 3d-motion tracking gadget?

AFAIK, DICE has been very supportive of the mod community. Much of their success with BF2 and BF1942 is owed to Desert Combat, Project Reality, and other popular mods of their original game.

The reason that Bad Company 1 & 2 didn't have mod tools, is because it was a brand new engine developed on the cheap, that was mainly meant for consoles. Mod tools were simply not feasible. I don't think EA or DICE expected the stars to line up where Frostbite would become the main engine for Battlefield 3. That being said, BF3 runs on the Frostbite 2.0 engine, which was supposedly cleaned up and opens the possibility of mod tools.

Eh, being able to read the games asset files and being able to engineer a game binary are worlds apart but I'm glad people are working on this. At this rate it feels like we'll need a "Vintage Battlefield" mod just to have a Battlefield game that, well, plays like a Battlefield game.

All I want to do is tweak the equipment and make maps. If I could do that you would get a real Battlefield 3.

Speaking for the PR team (I am a mere mod but know the background) DICE have never once been supportive of mods. They let them happen as they had no choice, but never once have they been any way supportive.

Still praying for BF3 PR to make BF3 the game it should have been.

Re: Interesting tidbit regarding the hope for BF3 mods

played PR for a little under 2 weeks, and some other mod we had for awhile(though I can't recall the name of it. Anyways.......I hated it. Just not my style of game....way to slow, which is fine. I'm sure everyone who reads the forums knows I am not a fan of those style of games. If I am being brutally honest my issue is this:

I don't try and make milsim or realism based games into COD or BF....I wish others in the milsim/realism community would stop trying to make COD/BF style of games into realism/milsim games. I know I won't like RO2....so I don't play RO2, Simple as that. I don't go into there forums trying to turn it into a game that I like. If they want to mod the game with tools and do it the way PR was done that's fine...it was like it's own game with it's own servers anyway. Tweaking server settings like no crosshair or hud to force more situational awareness is fine as well. Now however all we have is vanilla BF3 and they want to totally change that. I have seen people posting on wanting no vehicle regen, or longer time between med packs or a host of other things they want brought in from games such as PR or ARMA. Why? The game is BF. Don't say it's to follow the primer, because if the game doesn't adhere to the primer than take it off the forums and play list.
I have seen this in the past with other titles and watched as they were molded into games they were never meant to be. Then the community dies off. My point is this...for realism/milsim...we have other titles for that.

I just want to state that I'm not mad at anyone. I understand you have favorite characteristics of other games....but again this is BF. Sorry to go off on a rant on you Namebot....I hope you know this isn't personal or attacking....just my opinion. I'm sure i will offend and get nastygrams but at least I can say I laid the cards out on the table and was honest.

As Forrest Gump said "that's all I got to say about that"

                PS To Zhohar....pretty sure I derailed there....sorry.

Re: Interesting tidbit regarding the hope for BF3 mods

My main reason for asking is because Greasy worked on Point of Existence, not Project Reality. Here is a video of POE:

                    intro
                    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKuNx...eature=related

                    assault gameplay
                    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47leZJrDdpg

Other than the completely new vehicle/weapon/map content the changes to game play were only minor balance issues and not complete redesigns of how the game worked. More weapon damage, no CO UAV, that kind of stuff.

He and the other POE guys did some excellent map making. At the very least I would love for community made maps to be able to made and I know we have some guys here who can out do the DICE maps.

As far as the whole BF3 =/= milsim thing, I'm there with you. I like playing the game pretty much how it is. But I'll get bored of it sooner rather than later it'd be great if there was the possibility to have more maps/vehicles/weapons any sort of content available. Some of it will be picked up and some of it won't, we can run more than one type of server.

You want to give more maps, vehicles, and guns...I'm all about it. It's just gutting the game play and balance system of the game that I take issue with.

                          -----------------------------------------------------------

Your way out of line. No one here is suggesting we drop BF3 for some as yet unmade mod. PLUS your commenting in a thread SPECIFICALLY about mod tools. Please, do me and other posters a favour, if your going to bash POE and PR and other mods that people (Including TG members) have put effort into, do it somewhere else, as your tone, ingratitude and attitude offends them and me. If you have a problem with mods, how about DON'T post in a thread SPECIFICALLY about mod tools. Finally, as for communities dieing off, that is totally irrelevant here, what happened in COD has the square root of bugger all to do with BF3, so stop trying to drag that old news here. If you have a problem with THIS post, bring it to PM's. Otherwise, lets get this thread back on track.#

Admin hat back on, as you were folks.

Re: Interesting tidbit regarding the hope for BF3 mods

Ven I will reply in full tonight, but just to outline some of the flaws in your statement. If the option is in BF3, ie length of time for med pack, hardcore, no vehicle regen then it is as much a part of BF3 as a short timer, Mon hardcore and regen. Its in the game, its BF3.

As the GO for two of the 'Realism' titles at TG, who by the way likes the normal settings, I am sick and tired of seeing players who happen to play said titles labelled and made to feel unwelcome by other players who somehow feel they 'own' BF3. Guess what, most of the 'PR' players I know played BF2 for years, they understand it.

You haven't seen PR players telling 2142 fans to stop going on about 2142, a popular comparison since the announcement of BF3's impending release. Why, because that would be rude and somewhat hypocritical. We all have our hopes and wishes for a new title and near everyone posting has outlined them at some point.

I'll have more later as this needs addressing, frankly this sort of attitude (not your post exclusively) is starting to wear thin with me, making players feel unwelcome is not acceptable. If you bought the game and play it you are a BF3 player, its as simple as that, not PR, not COD, not 2142, and we are all TG.

                              Nothing personal, just needs saying.
