  • Must...get...better!!!!

Aloha all. I recently purchased BF3, and after install thought I could jump right back into a FPS with skills I possessed from when I played BF2142. Welllllllll...<snicker>... it appears as though, at some point, I have hit my head. EVERYTHING that I once knew is gone. Maybe its a tumor?

Anyway, I'm obviously looking to improve. I'm tired of having the title "Worst K/D ratio this side of the Mississippi". Does anyone have suggestions of servers/some solo practice areas that I can refine my abilities? I would greatly appreciate the assistance.

    Peace

Start by working reducing the "D" half of K/D ;)

Seriously though, it's all about knowing which area's are safe and which area's are hot. For example - if you're back is against the out-of-bounds line, you only have to worry about being shot from 180 degree's in front of you. If you then kneel with a big tree on your left, you cut your exposure to 90 degrees front/right. If you then realize that flag to your right is held by a friendly squad, you reduce your exposure even more - you can now expect to not be shot by someone you don't see... or... at least they'll shoot you from within your field of view. At this point, you can concentrate on being more observant of the horizon/bushes.

Just by positioning yourself so you won't be shot in the back/sides, you'll improve your K/D a LOT. You may not have quite as many kills as first since you're not charging in to a firefight - but you'll also die a lot less. The more you play with that "limit my exposure" mindset, the better you get at it and can keep yourself safe even while moving around quite a bit.

    "Situational Awareness" FTW.

        Re: Must...get...better!!!!

        Welcome back.

I suck in CQB as my twitch skills are useless. What helps me the most is working in and among a squad that is communicating and working together effectively. Looking at kit layout in this regard is extremely helpful. Don't have a medic...make sure someone in the squad is a medic. Make sure you call out when you go down so that the medic can save you. Each time he does that's another factor on your K/D ratio. This requires some leadership of course as if no one is a medic you need a leader to issue the order. If no one steps up go ahead and take a leadership role yourself. Doesn't matter what your skill level is. At TG just the fact that you stepped up is a huge chit in your favor and your squad mates will appreciate it. (until they are wiped out while you cross an open field)

Ruhyman was in my squad for a round or two the other night -- did great. A fine team play and an excellent squad mate.

Stand behind me after I've had a couple of beers, I usually catch most of the lead flying about.

              Re: Must...get...better!!!!

While the twitchers and run-and-gunners can still be successful in this game, I feel this game really promotes the basics (using cover, playing as a squad, etc.) and everyone has a fair shot once they shake their habits from other games. Part of that is probably the damage model.

To W6's point, keep your back to friendlies (unless Spur is on your team), and your front to the baddies, and if you aren't sure what to do, don't do anything. This game doesn't seem to penalize you as much for standing still like BC2 seemed to do. It took me a week to stop holding the shift key for whole rounds.

All right, all right, enough of this sappy show of emotion. This is BF. We pillage before we burn, and we teabag after we knife. Now let me see your war face.
